Causes of Red Itchy Rash on the Stomach
As mentioned earlier, an itchy stomach rash can be a result of a disease or disorder existing in the body. But which are the diseases or situations that cause an itchy rash on the stomach? Here are the main causes listed in some detail.
Allergies
Allergies are said to be one of the most probable causes of an itchy rash. With regards to an itchy rash on the stomach, allergies can be of two types. One is an allergy generated out of contact dermatitis, and the second one is caused due to certain medications and drugs. In case of contact dermatitis, a person encounters allergy due to exposure to various allergens or due to direct and close contact with a person suffering from the same problem.
Eczema
This skin infection is also known as atopic dermatitis. It is a chronic skin disorder, which is hereditary. Eczema itches a lot and appears as scaly, red, itchy, and dry rash. Scratching leads to the skin getting even more inflamed. It mostly affects children, and usually appears on the arms and legs, but sometimes can be experienced on the stomach area too.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is supposed to another common cause of an itchy rash on the stomach. Psoriasis is non-contagious, and experts believe that it is an autoimmune disease. Psoriasis is not only confined to an itchy rash on the stomach, and can spread to other parts of the body too.
Infections
Infections are the most widely found causes of an itchy rash on the stomach. There are two types of infections which can lead to an itchy stomach rash during pregnancy or even during normal times. Infections could be either bacterial or fungal. The most commonly found bacterial skin infection is impetigo, which is mainly a result of strep or staph germs. However, this infection is commonly found in children, and there have been very few cases in which adults have been affected. Fungal infections, on the other hand, are not so common. This is because they are not contagious and therefore are not transmitted easily through direct contact with people or pets. Other causes can be mumps, rubella, roseola, measles, ringworm, pityriasis rosea and scarlet fever.
Scabies
An itchy rash on the stomach from scabies is mainly a result of mites. Scabies mites enter the outer layer of the skin and then lay eggs under it. These mostly feed on our blood. Scabies rashes are extremely itchy and are characterized by blistering of the skin accompanied by redness. Along with the stomach, scabies rashes are most commonly found on the buttocks, fingers, wrists, and the armpits.
Other Causes
The above were some of the most common causes of an itchy rash on the stomach. However, apart from these, some more common causes of an itchy rash on the stomach include measles and chickenpox. But these are uncommon causes, and there have been a very few cases due to these causes, at least off late. Moreover, these are mostly found in young children and affect adults quite rarely. Rheumatoid arthritis also leads to joint inflammation, and can be a cause of stomach rash.
Rash Treatment
The exact treatment for an itchy rash on the stomach can be determined only when a skin specialist diagnoses the condition and finds out the exact reason behind it. For infections, antifungal or antibacterial creams (whichever is applicable) are mostly prescribed. If allergies from certain medications are the reason, then the doctor might suggest stopping them and prescribe some other effective alternatives. Nonetheless, proper medical intervention at the earliest is necessary to treat this condition.
An itchy rash on the stomach can be painful too. Also, if left untreated, it can result into something serious eventually, especially if the cause is something serious. But anyway, it is not a condition that allows a person to leave it untreated. Nevertheless, a proper diagnosis and treatment is the best way to treat an itchy rash on the stomach.
