Your computer is the lifeline of your business and should be well equipped to handle what’s thrown at it in a day’s work. Here are some things an online entre-preneur should have in their home office:

Computer - You should have a good quality, reliable computer with a large amount of memory for downloading software and keeping other tools saved on the hard drive. Laptops are beneficial for those who want to work on-the-go, but they’re not a necessity. If your computer comes with good recording equipment built-in, then you’ll be able to leverage multi media formats like creating podcasts and video tools like Camtasia.

Internet - Your Internet connection should be high-speed, not dialup. Dialup can’t handle most of the applications that an Internet marketer uses. Your high-speed connection should be reliable like DSL, cable or wireless. Satellite Internet connections are notorious for losing signals on bad weather days. You can’t afford to have your business shut down because you can’t access it. Customers would panic and your reputation could be damaged.

Software - There are a lot of software applications that an Internet marketer could use, but the absolute most important ones are virus, spyware and firewall applications to keep your computer safe from hackers and nasty bugs. You could also use a web designing software for building your websites, such as DreamWeaver if you plan on taking the do it yourself route. You should have an email program to send and receive communications, too.

Printer - You’ll need a printer that can multi task for you when you need it. Consider an all-in-one unit that you could use as a fax, copier, and scanner for your business needs. By getting an all in one unit, you can save a lot of money.

Miscellaneous - You should also have a reliable phone, whether it’s a landline or VoIP phone. A comfortable chair will be needed for all of those hours you’ll end up at your computer working on your business.

While it’s important to keep your business and marketing skills sharpened, your home office will need an evaluation periodically, too. The office is your business, because everything is done on the computer, so it should never be ignored.

Make sure all of your equipment is in good shape and replace parts when needed. Remember to back up your files and keep the equipment clean and free of dust. Neglect can wreak havoc on your business if you keep putting it off until tomorrow.
