Is Pentax A Good Waterproof Camera?
You want a waterproof camera, which doesn’t cost a bomb? Then Pentax, the world leader in its category is the right choice for you. Read on, to find out just how.
Many people take part in adventure sports, including water sports such as snorkeling and kayaking. But in the absence of a good waterproof camera, they are unable to record their adventures.
The first thing you need, when you look for a waterproof camera, is an assurance that it is, indeed, waterproof.
As Pentax is a Japanese product, it is subject to the stringent Japanese Industry Standard (JIS). So, a camera with a JIS certification can be trusted to deliver quality. The Optio W30, the latest waterproof camera from Pentax, conforms to Japanese Industry Standard (JIS) Waterproof Standard 8 and JIS Dustproof Standard 5. This means that you can use this camera at upto 10 feet depth of water for up to two hours, at a time.
Its sturdy body of aluminum alloy and its soap bar design in matte silver, silver-grey and bright chrome colors make this camera look very sleek.
This camera weighs just 5.6 ounces, and is very portable and can be handled using just one hand. It has a strap which has to be attached to the wrist to prevent the camera from slipping from your hand and falling into the water. The sealing is very good, and includes the covers for the DC and the USB/AV jacks at the bottom. Rubber gaskets protect the battery and storage card compartment, from water.
The optical 3X zoom lens (internalized to increase portability) insures good image quality. The aperture has a narrow range; landscape photo options are therefore limited. However, the camera has a Digital Shake Reduction mode; this insures blur-free photos at high ISO of 3200. In sum, underwater image and movie quality is good.
A large 2.5-inch display, Auto Mode, Movie Mode, Synchro Sound Record Mode, 22 MB memory, Digital Shake Reduction, Movie Shake Reduction, Drive/ Burst Mode, Playback Mode, Manual Control options, protective covers and doors with spring-loaded latches that secure automatically etc, and decent shutter speed are among the camera’s features.
In the movie mode, the internal memory size allows continuous shooting upto 20 seconds.
In spite of its low resolution, narrow aperture range, no autofocus illuminator light, no active CCD anti-blur, this is a good camera which is very moderately priced.
