Is Google Changing The Way We Write Article Content?
Be aware that Google is rating your article content using a whole range of weighting factors. If you think the title tag and naming the filename as a keyword is important then read on - you will be surprised.
Article content is changing in a big way. Google becomes smarter and more discerning every day and the way we write articles is more than ever starting to be closely scrutinized from the 900 lb gorilla. If content is King then context is fast becoming Queen.
LSI, (Latent Semantic Indexing), phrase matching, the theme of the page, use of specific niche only keywords, (eg any hobby or sport has it's own vocabulary), and a whole host of other factors will determine the "rank" Google puts on your article.
Most of us have been expecting this for a while now. Every time some smarty brings out a piece of software to spam and fool the search engines the Se's get smart and start ignoring or even de-indexing sites overnight.
The same goes with the recent craze on PLR articles, (nothing wrong per se with PLR but most people don't have a clue what to do with them), and content spinners. Google is going to come down hard and sooner rather than later. Obviously there is always going to be the battle between opportunists and Google but you have to consider if it's really worthwhile for you.
Bear in mind that these people knocking out software to fool the engines make their living by trying to sell us the latest "You Can Be #1" script or desktop application. They make a lot of money because they are truly excellent at marketing by playing on emotion and ignorance. Let's face it, just about every newbie wanting to start an online home business is going to fall for the $49.97 promise. We've all been caught at some stage.
So, the long term business strategy for these black / grey hat guys is to continually write software every time the search engines have an algorithm change. Is YOUR long term business strategy to continually buy this junk or to live happily within the system and let your business grow naturally by implementing established best practice?
As we get a little more experienced, become a little more cynical and generally more knowledgeable it becomes quite hard to be taken for a ride but let's not forget there are always people smarter than us so it pays to be extra cautious.
Duplicate pages are out of control, for now! Google is so concerned about user experience it will deal with dupe content. Previously there was no penalty as such, the dupes, as determined by Google, were just ignored. Perhaps in the future we will start to see some penalties being imposed, not so much for duplicate content, after all, more than copy of an article can be on many websites, but maybe for what they determine as low quality spun content. The issue here may be that what level is determined as being unacceptable quality.
You can no longer tell Google, (mostly), what your page is all about. They haven't been using the keyword meta tag for ages and although they are still using the title and filename as a guide these 2 attributes are becoming less important in their determining the overall content and theme of a page.
It is always worth keeping an eye on the patent applications that Google makes. Or at least, if you are not technically minded visit some good SEO forums where you can read about it in plain English. Listen to what Google is telling you and play by their rules if you want a long term business.
So it appears that for an article to get top marks with Google, (let's wait for the next generation of software to flood the market giving your article marks out of ten according to the latest algorithm), it is essential to not overuse keywords and phrases, use synonyms, be lexically semantic, have a topically relevant page theme, use niche buzz words and don't spin your articles 200 times. In other words, just write naturally as we have been doing before we even heard of search engines.
