Is Discharge a Sign of Early Pregnancy?

There are many women who don't know they are pregnant until they are a couple of months along in their pregnancy. This can be due to an irregular cycle. When a woman with an irregular cycle misses a period, she is not as likely to notice it as a woman whose cycle is regular.

However, there are some other signs that happen very early in pregnancy. In fact, sometimes they show up within a week or two of conception! One of the first signs of pregnancy is a change in vaginal secretions resulting in a clearish-white discharge.

Early in pregnancy, women will more often than not have an increase in discharge. They may even mistake this for an infection of some kind, especially if they do not normally have much discharge.

Even if discharge is normal for a woman, the texture, amount, and scent will be different when a woman is pregnant. The discharge in early pregnancy has a lotion-like texture. The scent is light and may probably not unpleasant enough to bother you much. There will be more discharge than normal. This kind of discharge tends to last throughout your pregnancy.

Yeast infections are also more common in pregnancy. Often this is the first time a woman will experience a vaginal infection. If your discharge is more of a cottage cheese-like texture, has an unpleasant odor and causes burning and itching, you probably have a yeast infection. While there are over the counter medicines available for this, if this is the first time you have experienced it, you should have it diagnosed by a doctor. Sometimes this type of discharge is caused by an STD or something more serious than a yeast infection.

If there is a possibility that you could be pregnant and you experience a change in discharge, this is typical. Don't assume you are pregnant based on that alone. There are other reasons for a change in discharge and hormone levels can change for other reasons as well. It is advisable to purchase an early pregnancy test and then see your doctor to be sure.
