During the childbearing years, almost every women goes through a phase when she is having an irregular menstruation cycle. This is mostly triggered by hormonal fluctuations. Most women get tensed with this change as they assume that something is seriously wrong with their health. Though the fact is that it is not always a matter of concern. In some cases, it is an absolutely normal occurrence, This is a common problem among women who are approaching menopause. It may also happen to young girls soon after the start of first menstruation.

Causes of Irregular Menstruation Cycle

Irregularity of menstrual cycle can be of different types. In general, menstrual cycle occurs after a gap of 28 days. Usually, late menstrual cycle or early menstrual cycle are considered as irregularity. Some women even complain about bleeding between periods. There are several factors that can be responsible for these abnormalities. Common irregular periods causes are given below:

Stress: This is one of the most common cause due to which women get frequent irregularity in periods. It causes hormonal imbalance in the body which in turn affect the menstrual cycle.

Menopause: During the menopausal stage, the levels of various reproductive hormones in your body start decreasing. As a result, lots of irregularity can be observed. Some may get light periods and others may experience heavy bleeding during period. Sometimes, the period may stop in between for few months.

Contraceptive Pills: When you use a new hormonal birth control pill, then your body need some time to adjust itself with the change in hormone levels that take place. During this time, irregularity is likely to be observed for a few months.

Eating Disorder: If you are following a poor, unhealthy diet to lose weight, then you may face this problem. Sudden weight gain due to eating wrong kind of foods also result in abnormal functioning of the reproductive hormones and may lead to delayed period.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: In this condition, small cysts are formed inside the ovaries which adversely affect the normal ovulation process. As a result, one may get long menstrual cycles in some months or no period for few months. This could be a serious issue and should be evaluated by doctors.

Other Causes: Some underlying health problems can be responsible for abnormal menstrual cycles. Inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, tuberculosis, diabetes are some of them. Strenuous physical activity or intense exercising could be responsible for delaying menstrual cycle too.

Treatment for Irregular Menstrual Cycle

The treatment for this problem depends on the cause. If it is caused by stress, then proper stress management can bring back normalcy in your menstrual cycle. For this, you can try meditation or any other relaxation technique. Any eating disorder need to be treated with change in diet and proper counseling. In this case, you have to eat healthy foods and avoid fast foods. Those who were skipping meals to lose weight should stop that habit immediately. Too much of exercise is bad for health. So, if you were doing that in recent times, then you must cut it down and give scope for the menstrual cycle to return to normal. Hormonal birth control pills are often used for the treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome. It helps to restore the balance of hormonal levels. Sometimes, hormone supplements are used for the treatment of some hormone fluctuation problems.

When you have a long term irregular menstruation cycle, then there is a chance of some kind of complications and you must visit a doctor for proper treatment. In case it is accompanied by excessive bleeding, abdominal cramping, then also a doctor should to be consulted. However, if you have missed menstrual cycle suddenly, then you need not get panicked unnecessarily. Your anxiousness can delay the period further. Rather, wait for few months and your regular cycle may get restored on its own.
