Important Irish Celtic Symbols
The Celtic Tree of life - This symbol stands for spirituality, wisdom and hope. It means the one who is the source of sustenance since the tree gave them food and shelter. Irish people believed that the tree had the power to convey their messages to the divine forces and it was considered by then that it is actually a bridge that connects the upper and lower realms of being. Amongst all the trees they considered the Oak tree as the most sacred tree of all. Irish people also believed that some trees have the power of healing and therefore hung personal belongings on such trees.
The Salmon- The salmon which is a predominant Irish Celtic symbol stood for wisdom and knowledge. It is said that this fish lived in the sacred of the sacred wells and were aware of the mysteries of the world and had deep and secret knowledge.
The Shamrock or The Three Leaf Clover- The shamrock is always associated with Ireland and though not the official emblem of Ireland it still holds a lot of importance in the minds and hearts of Irish people as well as the people of the world. People perceive Ireland when they see a Shamrock and it is also a very common and popular symbol that is engraved on boxes and many gift items like pendants and rings. The meaning and significance of the shamrock lies in the three leaves that it has. The three symbolize the three goddesses of Celtic tradition and is considered to hold many mystical powers. The number "3" makes it all the more powerful I regards of power. Irish people believe that the three leaves incorporate the entire world symbolically. Past, present and future; heaven, earth and hell; land, sea and sky all comes in triplets and so comes the three leaves of shamrock.
The Claddagh- The shape of this symbol is enough to convey the message that it bears- two hands hold a heart which has a crown on its head. It is said that Claddagh upholds the emotions of love, friendship, loyalty and affection. Initially this symbol could only be seen on rings, especially wedding and engagement rings but nowadays they can be seen on pendants, jewelry boxes and all sorts of things. Nowadays it can be given to friends as well and anybody to whom you want to express love.
The Celtic Spirals- There are various shapes of spirals and at times there is only one spiral and at other times there are two or more spirals attached to each other which most of the times describe man’s journey from his inner world to encompass the world beyond. It shows his journey from the inner world to the outer. There are triple spirals which are found sometimes and they mean the cycle of bring from birth to death and rebirth again.
