Users of cable internet will not require the DSL filters for their telephones since cable internet does not make use of the telephone system for access. However, should the cable system experience an outage, the internet access will likely be unavailable too.

Choosing between DSL providers can be an overwhelming task for shoppers who are unfamiliar with the choices provided. Most providers off varying subscription costs depending upon the connection speed chosen. Light internet users may benefit from a lower speed - and therefore lower cost - access plan, while those who telecommute or work from home regularly will need a faster connection speed. Teenagers can put some of the highest demands on internet access; downloading music and online gaming require the highest connection speeds. Selecting the DSL provider and subscription plan that best meets the family’s needs is no more difficult than simply ‘surfing the net.’
