Invention of the Internet

This article on invention of the Internet would give answers to what, when and who related to the Internet. Read on to know more about Internet.
Anytime, anywhere if one has to keep abreast with the latest occurrences and events, Internet is possibly the best and simplest option. One click and you latch on to what you want. The technology in all probability has traversed through a series of developments in the fastest time which perhaps has not been witnessed in case of other inventions and their correlated advancements. Invention of the Internet is one among all that carries lots of weight in today's era. Scroll down to know more about Internet.

The desire to embark upon a global communication system can be tracked to the first Atlantic Cable of 1858 which, though, remained in service only for a short period 24 days owing to technical snags. Subsequently, replaced and developed version of 1866, Atlantic Cable was a milestone and an inspiration for exploring and expanding horizons of a world wide communication system. On 4th Oct 1957 USSR successfully launched the first earth satellite, Sputnik, and this event encouraged the US President Dwight D Eisenhower to strike at a viable communication networking system. On learning this, I am sure you must be curious to know the history and its invention. So, here we go...

Tracing the history of inception of the Internet, it was an American computer scientist Vinton Cerf who invented the Internet. As part of a project launched by the United States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), directed by an American engineer Robert Kahn, Vinton Cerf was the forerunner in developing Internet Transmission Control Protocol (ITCP), the first of its kind in 1973. It took precisely one year to publish the works followed by another nine years when in 1983 the first computer network saw the light of the day. However, before the developments could be made public the ARPA had established a three-way network connection in 1977 linking SATNET, PRNET and ARPANET traversing from Menlo Park, CA, to University college London and once again back to Marina del Rey, CA.

Giving due credence in formulating the Internet communication system by the ARPA of the USA, a British scientist, Tim Berners-Lee further added to the utility and the invention by proposing the first World Wide Web (WWW) in March 1989. He along with a young student Robert Cailliau holds the honor of successfully establishing a communication in between a HTTP client and a server with Internet as the medium on 25th Dec 1990. Interestingly the first World Wide Web address was "info.cern.ch".

Having made ourselves familiar with the history of the Internet, it will also be worthwhile to watch the Timeline that the Internet has been subjected to and know when was Internet invented.

Timeline of Internet Invention

1984:
Perhaps the era of web accessibility is ushered-in by introduction of first IBM Screen Reader developed by Jim Thatcher.

1988:
All is not well that starts well. Robert Tappan Morris, Jr. releases the first ever known virus "Morris Worm" inflicting a good number of computers. This necessitates the requirement of a reliable security system.

1990 and 1991:
Tim Berne-Lee introduces the first WWW branding official beginning of Internet technology. Apple initiates first version of Quick Time and Java, earlier known as Oak and invented by James Gosling, came into service.

1992-93:
World Bank gets online. World Wide Web becomes free to the Internet users. Mosaic Browser version 1.0 is introduced by Eric Bina and Marc Andreessen.

1994:
After File Transfer Protocol (FTP), WWW becomes the next popular Internet service eliminating Telenet and White House goes online.

1995:
Internet users get an access to radio and real-time music and WWW beats out FTP to become the most popular service. CNN and ESPN go online.

1996:
Web based e-mail services introduced by Hotmail and Microsoft releases IE3. Yahoo becomes a public Internet service company.

1998:
Google finds it way in the cyber world and its clutter-free interface places it on top of the popularity scale.

2003:
A new era of Social Networking is witnessed by launch of "MySpace" and the term "Phishing" comes into being for the first time.

2006:
Various web-hosted applications co-opted to launch Windows thus making the start of business rivalry between Microsoft and Google.

This was the Internet timeline and I am quite sure that there is still no end to it because everyday something new is being added to the world of Internet. Efficacy of Internet can well be discerned from the fact that it was 75 years for telephone and 13 for television to subscribe to nearly 50 million people as against 500 million strong, around the globe, people with Internet access in just half a decade. How was that!
