Introduction to Tetra Fish
A general introduction to the tetra fish species for your tropical freshwater aquarium.
If you intend to setup a tropical freshwater aquarium, basically there are different types of fish species you can choose to create the natural look. One of the most popular selections among fish owners is tetra fish, which are popular for their bright coloration. The fish is highly adaptable to tropical warm waters, and with its small size which is than less 2 inches, you can even consider using it to setup a mini aquarium.
The tetra species are also known for their peaceful nature and they will mix well among each other. Some of the common tetras are neon tetra, cardinal tetra and congo tetra. All the fish exhibit one similar characteristic, in which they will form large school when moving around from one place to another. They are generally shy and if frightened will search for hiding spot and they won’t come out until they feel safe to do so. As such having live aquarium plant is a must if you intend to keep this fish.
All tetras are egg layers and they are notorious for eating their young fry. As such, it is important that as soon as you can see free swimming fry in the aquarium, you should take the effort to separate the parents to another fish tank. When it comes to food, generally tetras are not picky and will readily accept dried flakes including small fish pellets. Occasional mix of live foods such as microworms is also important to maintain balanced diet.
In terms of water chemistry, naturally they will do well within 20- 25 degree Celsius similar like their natural habitat in the wild. In terms of pH, they prefer slightly acidic to alkaline water from 5.5 to 7.5. In order to ensure that the fish stays healthy, most important criteria is to ensure the water parameters are always perfect. Avoid sudden jump or fluctuation especially pH and temperature to avoid shock. They are also very particular in term of water cleanliness and regular water changes are needed to ensure there is no spread of disease.
If well cared for, tetra fish will provide endless fun and excitement for the owner.
