If the debts far exceed your financial capabilities to clear on time, you may consider credit counseling.

The simplest method is to try to search either online or in a phone book. Of course, you must beware of possible scams like credit counseling agency offering to repair bad credit in a very short time, or create a new identity for you. You should stay away from them if you feel too good to be true.

Trustworthy credit counseling companies will only accept you as their client if only you’ve passed some prerequisites. The basic requirements for most agencies is that you need to have a source of stable income and some unsecured debts. Why unsecured debts? Because credit counseling may not help you much if you’ve problem with secured debts like mortgage or a car loan.

You should bring along all copies and statements from your current loans with you the first appointment with the credit counselor. They will need to know the details of your situation, such as the amount you owe and the monthly payments you are supposed to make.

From then on, it’s the counselor’s job. They will contact your lender and try to negotiate new payment terms and lower interest rates. In fact, you are giving two choice to repay the loans – make the payments yourself or make one lump sum to them and let them handle all payments. However, before you entrust them with that lump sum of money, make sure they have no history of missed payments. This is to reduce, if not prevent any damage to your credit history caused by the agency.

Once the new payment terms have been agreed upon, a new budget will be devised for you by the credit counselor in order to help you improve your financial situation. If you follow that budget, you have higher chances of avoiding financial trouble in the future. They may recommend some software programs that you can use to plan your budget more efficiently. The counselor is willing to provide advice to you anytime whenever you need it.

If five year’s term to clear your debts are the acceptable range for you other than filing for bankruptcy, do not hesitate and let the professional help you.
