Audio signals are broadcasted, largely referred to as web casting as it is broadcasted using the World Wide Web. It is also referred to as "e-radio". The term ascribes that the system works like a traditional radio wherein there is a continuous flow of signal, which is converted into audio units, and we don’t have control over them. These Internet radio stations correspond to terrestrial radio stations but unlike the latter, Internet radio is accessible from anywhere in the world and that is only due to the technology of broadcasting that is being used.

What is Internet Radio Broadcasting?

As mentioned above there is a different technology of broadcasting used for Internet radio. The bits are streamed with the help of "Lossy Audio Codec".
The components of the audio stream are as follows:
  • Audio Stream Source
  • Audio Stream repeater
  • Audio Stream Playback.
The repeater converts the audio bits into a streaming format, the source makes it available on the Internet and then the Playback system retrieves the content. Ogg Vorbis can create the stream source. It is one of the many ways like Windows Media Audio and Real Audio to create an audio stream.

Real Audio is one of the earliest formats of streaming audio and then number of newer versions were introduced. It has evolved up to a point where it is no more limited to audio signals, now it has a become strong medium of mass communication and there are talk shows, political debates, women’s issues and lots more that is now included in the entertainment package of Internet radio. The only requirement initially was Internet access and that is a PC or a Laptop but now we are trying to evolve technology so that it Internet radio is available on mobile phones and car audio systems.

Internet Radio Broadcasters

Radio Broadcasters are software that consist of encoders MP3, mp3PRO and several other variable facilities which differs with the technology used to prepare the software. The basic function of the broadcaster is to channelise the audio bits properly towards the receivers so that listeners can listen to it. The latest Internet broadcasters can handle requests from the listeners, provides album cover art and also links to buy CD. It actually acts as an interface for interaction. Some of the broadcasters now do not require a sound card, they already have dual deck players and play lists that can handle more than 50,000 files. It also provides you with "Gap killer" that would remove the gap between two tracks. Broadcasters improve the quality of sound. It also helps in the smooth streaming which leads in placing the advertisements flexibly. It also effectively tracks down the effectiveness of the ads and the report the reach of the advertisement. It helps in inserting changes dynamically and order of clips or tracks, insert a new track or an advertisement for that matter. This is improvement because initially broadcasting had to be stopped when something had to be changed or inserted. The effectiveness of the broadcaster can be measured how the receiver receives though the quality of the receiver also has to play a role. So knowledge of Internet radio receivers is also important.

Internet radio Receivers

These are devices that are present with an individual listener and these devices receive the broadcasted signals and convert them into audio or video. In nutshell any computer that has Internet access can be converted into Internet radio receiver and need to download software like Windows Media Player 11 or RealOne or QuickTime. Once the downloading is done different radio stations can be searched, launched and played.
