Internal Bleeding Symptoms

Internal bleeding is the bleeding that occurs inside the body. It can occur in various places like, within the tissues, organs and cavities or spaces inside the body. It often results when the blood vessels get damaged, and blood escapes from the circulatory system to get accumulated inside the body. The severity of the condition depends on the extent of the damage that causes bleeding, and location of the internal bleeding. Internal bleeding or hemorrhage of the vital organs like, brain, lungs and abdomen can lead to life-threatening complications, and hence, calls for immediate medical attention.

Internal Bleeding Causes

It can be caused by serious injuries, especially caused by falling from a great height, and deceleration trauma. It can also be caused by fractures, as well as rupture of the blood vessels, which can occur in the patients of high blood pressure. Cancer is another common cause of this condition. Some other important causes are, liver cirrhosis, gastric disorders, ectopic pregnancy, autoimmune thrombocytopenia, ovarian cyst, colon polyps, diverticulitis, vascular disorders, miscarriage, and bleeding disorders like, hemophilia. People with bleeding disorders, and those taking anticoagulant drugs can experience spontaneous bleeding. Apart from these, alcohol abuse, and use of certain anti-inflammatory medications can also increase the risk for internal bleeding.

Internal Bleeding Signs

Its symptoms may not be always obvious. Sometimes, bleeding can be seen, while at other times, it can be concealed. It also depends on the extent of bleeding, and its location. Sometimes, pain and tenderness, and bruising of the affected or injured area can be the only symptom of internal bleeding. As for example, internal bleeding occurring in the abdominal region can present the symptom of pain only. If a significant amount of blood is lost, then the person may feel weakness, and dizziness or light-headedness. Additionally, blood pressure can fall due to loss of blood. In the case of gastrointestinal bleeding, the person can vomit blood and pass black, tarry stool. If blood accumulates in the peritoneum, the abdomen can feel very rigid along with severe stomach pain.

Intracranial bleeding, on the other hand can adversely affect the mental functions of the affected individuals. Other symptoms within the brain include, slurred speech, weakness and vision problems. Internal bleeding of the urinary tract including the kidneys, can cause blood in urine. If a large amount of blood is lost, then it can lead to shock, which is accompanied by symptoms like, clammy skin, confusion, paleness, dizziness, shortness of breath, rapid, but weak pulse and low blood pressure.

Internal Bleeding Treatment

The diagnosis is carried out with the help of a number of tests and examinations like, blood test, CT scan, ultrasound, colonoscopy, endoscopy and angiography. The treatment depends on the location of the bleeding, as well as overall health condition of the patient. On the basis of these, treatment is aimed towards stopping the source of bleeding, and evaluating and repairing the damage. So, proper diagnosis or identification of the source of bleeding is key to the effective treatment of this condition.

Depending on the location and the extent of damage, it can be quite serious at times. An understanding of the condition can however, help to identify the condition on time to ensure prompt treatment. People with the specific medical conditions, that are associated with an increased risk for internal bleeding should be watchful for the symptoms of the condition, especially the symptoms of shock, which can occur due to internal bleeding. Otherwise, shock, which can occur due to heavy bleeding, can prove fatal at times.
