Instructions on How to Make a Decorative Wreath
So, the holiday season is here, or is it someone's wedding? Wreaths are (and always have been) one of the most elegant ways to decorate your door. For they say, "Who enters your door, shall enter your heart."
Your wreath can have a different look and a different feel for every season and holiday. Like, one prefers to have a red and green wreath for Christmas, and a dried wreath for Halloween. It all depends on the imagination and perception of the maker. If Jesus could make wine out of water, then we can definitely make something beautiful out of a few items, right?
A few basic requirements to make any wreath would be a wire cutter, a hot glue gun, a pair of ribbon-cutting scissors, floral picks and a floral tape (easily available at any hardware store). It would make sense to keep around 25 gauge craft wires in stock for making loops, for hanging and tying bows.
There are many types of wreaths that you can try. I personally believe that a wreath is a good way to decorate your door all through the year. Life is a constant celebration, right?
1.Straw Wreath
To make a wreath using a straw base, make a small arrangement of 3 or 4 flowers or other items and attach the stems to the wooden part of a floral pick. Make sure that the floral pick has a wire that can be wrapped around the stems in a secure manner. When you are done with the picks you can push them into the form. Yellow orange and Red oak leaves would be a good choice for a fall wreath, one that can charm any visitor! Wrap the wreath with wire or clear nylon strings (just to keep it safe).
2.Wire-based Wreath
Wire forms are the best choice for dried flower arrangements. They can handle heavy weight additions as well. Plan out the flowers that you wish to use for this wreath well in advance. To make a traditional evergreen holiday wreath, take a bouquet of fresh evergreens and place it on the wire frame. Use one hand to hold the flowers and the other hand to wrap the stems with wire. You could use twine for wrapping it as well. Work in a clockwise motion (works better that way) and tie it to the wreath. Continue this process until the entire wreath is wound. It should cover the the inner and outer edges of the frame. Don't be shy or miserly about using too many greens - the fuller the wreath, the better. You can try adding small holiday balls, red berries, crab apples, small oranges or glue some nuts on for a festive look. Bead and Jingle bell can be added for an even more interesting look.
3.Styrofoam Wreaths
These wreaths give an added class to a beach gathering. You can use floral picks and glue for these wreaths. It can also be a very good addition in a child's room. It adds a mysterious beauty to a baby's room too, you can hang tiny booties or the babies first rattle on it. Boy!! is this a multipurpose wreath. It can add a very sentimental and nostalgic feel to the wreath.
4.Grapevine Wreaths
Grapevine wreaths are the most versatile wreaths one can find. You can find or make one in any color, shape and for any budget. In fact, they look good even if they are not entirely covered up. You can make your own by taking three vines and twisting them together and securing it into a circle. Do the same with the other pieces one at a time, weaving them in and out of the original vines until it is as wide as you want. You can use a coat hanger to make a heart-shaped wreath in this manner.
You can save a lot of time by using a hot glue gun to attach dried flowers to grapevine wreaths. Adding the flowers in the right places can also be easier using a glue gun, it also helps in maintaining the balance. You can try using fresh eucalyptus, moss or lavender for a cottage garden look (my personal favorite).
You can be innovative with the use of wreaths. They can make very elegant table decorations and are also a good idea for name tags in a party. If the ideas flow, the possibilities are never ending!
