Installing a Fountain

Fountains make great focal points in the yard, and their gentle sounds can complete the atmosphere of any garden. Most small fountains are easily installed with minimal sweat by the average homeowner. You'll need the following materials:

1. Fountain with tubing installed

2. Nearby power source (or full sun for a solar pump)

3. Submersible pump with long enough power cord

4. Sturdy reservoir (strong plastic works great)

5. Concrete blocks to use as a pedestal support for your fountain

6. Plastic grid covering

7. Plastic mesh to keep out debris

8. Decorative stone

9. Shovel (for digging your hole), tarp and/or wheelbarrow (for transporting the dirt)

10. A level

Step One: Dig a hole deep enough and wide enough to accommodate your reservoir; Place the reservoir in the hole and level it.

Step Two: Place concrete blocks in the reservoir so that they form a pedestal support for your fountain. Be sure to use appropriately sized blocks so that the fountain will sit the way you want it to.

Step Three: Cut a hole in your plastic grid large enough to accommodate the pump. This way you'll have easy access for future maintenance on the pump.

Step Four: Most fountains come complete with the tubing that attaches to the pump. If yours does not, you'll need to install and seal it. Allow the tubing to extend through the base of the fountain and reach to the bottom of the reservoir.

Step Five: Cut a slit in your plastic mesh so that the tubing can easily slide through. Place the grid on top of the reservoir and concrete blocks. Put the plastic mesh on top of that, and finally, place the fountain on the pedestal with the tubing inserted through the mesh and all the way to the bottom of the reservoir.

Step Six: Attach the pump to the plastic tubing, and place the pump in the bottom of the reservoir.

Step Seven: Fill the reservoir with water always making sure your pump stays completely submerged; Running the pump without enough water will cause the motor to burn out.

Step Eight: Test your fountain by plugging it in. If you're happy that it's running properly, cover the mesh on top of the reservoir with decorative stone (or any other material that pleases you as long as it will not fall through into the reservoir potentially clogging the pump). Enjoy!
