Rash on inner thigh can often be a very discomfiting condition to deal with. It can make sitting and walking quite difficult. However, a rash occurs on inner thigh mostly due to tight clothes, allergies or heat rash. The possibility of developing an inner thigh rash due to a STD is rare. Hence, it is important you go to a doctor before jumping to any conclusions. Causes of Rash on Inner Thigh

Here are the possible skin disorders that could be causing this skin disorder.

Sweat Rash: A person can get a rash due to sweat, mostly during summers, and a person who has increased fat on thighs has more chances of getting the sweat rash. It occurs mostly along the folds of skin, and one can develop rash on inner thigh from running with poor hygiene as well.

Bad Clothing: Clothing made of synthetic material, or which has elastic that fits tightly on the skin or rubs against the skin can give a person rash on the inside of thighs. It can also be caused due to chemicals, like latex or rubber in the clothing. A person can also develop allergic reaction, to dyes or chemicals used in the clothing and get such a rash. Children using diapers, many times develop diaper rash.

Cosmetics: A person might get allergies due to a certain chemical in cosmetics, like lotion, or due to a specific soap or detergent. If you are using some new product, after which you have developed the thigh rash, then discontinue the use of such a product.

Poison Ivy/Sumac: Poison ivy, poison sumac or poison oak on contact, can give a person skin rash, which leads to severe itching. One can get such a rash when traveling in the wild, or from a pet.

Heat Rash: Due to heat, or heat combined with humidity, a person many times gets heat rashes or boils. The possibility of thigh rash in such weather is high, due to the increased sweating.

Jock Itch/Fungal Infection: Jock itch (tinea cruris), is a type of fungal infection of ringworm. The symptoms of jock itch are itching in the thigh skin folds, red or scaly rashes which can blister and ooze. The patches of jock itch, have sharply defined edges which are usually red with normal skin color in the center of the patch.

Allergies: Sometimes, a person having certain food allergy can also develop rash on their inner thigh. But, in case a person is allergic to some specific type of food, the rashes might occur on other skin regions too along with inner thigh. Common food allergens are nuts, avocados, strawberry, milk and shellfish.

Shingles: In shingles, a person experiences pain, itching, and burning sensation in a body part. Later on, the person develops red bumps or rashes in a skin region. If you experience such symptoms, then you need to visit a doctor for the treatment.

Insect Bites: One can get bumps or rash on inner thigh due to insect bites, like ants, mosquitoes, or bed bugs. The common insect bites go away on their own after few hours, but if the symptoms become worse seek medical help. If you get small red bumps on the skin, due to tick bites on your legs, it is a skin condition called rocky, for which medical treatment is required.

Shaving: Many times shaving the thighs with a razor can give some razor bumps. This might give you red itchy spots. In case, you have a tendency to develop sweat or heat rash, then it is possible that the razor bumps might develop into a large rash.

STD: Sexually transmitted disease (STD) like herpes, syphilis or warts; can cause inner thigh rash in men or women. The symptoms of these diseases differ, but they mostly occur in or around the genital areas, and can spread to areas below the groin, like inner thigh, so one should seek immediate medical care in such cases.

Treatment of Rash on Thigh

If you are experiencing itching due to the rash, the first thing you need to do is to stop the itching-scratching sensation. Here, are some home remedies and medical treatment one needs to approach:
  • To soothe the rash or bumps on the inner thigh, apply ice every few hours, or wash with cold water and pat the skin dry with a towel.
  • You can apply a soothing lotion to the affected area, natural aloe gel is the best remedy. Cut a leaf of aloe vera lengthwise and apply the fleshy part of the leaf on the rashes.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes made out of cotton. At home you can always wear shorts or avoid wearing pants.
  • However, if you are going for long walks, then wear denim or pants which have thicker material.
  • After showering or bathing, dry the groin and thigh area completely.
  • If you get sweat or heat rashes, you can use talcum powder to prevent further aggravating the rash. Talcum will help to dry and soothe the rash. There are talcum powders available at the supermarket, which contain mint and have extra cooling effect which you can opt for.
  • For skin rash due to fungal infections, use antifungal powders or cream twice in a day.
  • Wash the affected area twice in a day with cold water, and dry it completely.
  • If you are overweight and keep getting sweat rash, then consider going on a healthy diet and workout program.
  • If you shave your thighs, then use a thick shaving cream or gel. Then shave the area in the direction of the hair growth. After shaving, wash the area with cold water and apply a good amount of moisturizer.
Common thigh rash caused due to sweating or heat, or insect bites, can be gotten rid of with some above home remedies. However, if the rash is not getting better within few days, or you have inner thigh rash with skin abnormalities in or around your genital area, seek immediate medical help.
