Infrared Saunas – A New Wave

Infrared Saunas are taking over the traditional sauna as the new king of relaxation and personal care.
Actually, the infrared heat we enjoy in our saunas is not new at all. In fact, it’s been around a lot longer than you and I. Infrared heat is really a specific wavelength or ray emitted from the sun. You don’t need to worry though. Infrared is not the same as ultraviolet rays (which gives you a sunburn and can cause cancer) or atomic radiation (like the bomb).

To get specific, infrared energy (or radiation) is part of the electromagnetic spectrum that has a wavelength shorter than radio waves, but longer than visible light. This invisible wave is felt by you and I as heat. Have you ever been soaking rays on out on the beach only to be left cold because of a large cloud that obscured the sun? This missing heat is actually infrared radiation emitting from the sun. Even today infrared technology is used in weather tracking, military target acquisition, and even astronomy!

So how does this little red wave benefit us? Well, infrared heat has many health benefits. You see, the infrared wave’s emitted by an infrared heater found in a sauna or an everyday bathroom heater can penetrate our skin by up to 3 centimeters. This in turn expands blood capillaries, stimulating blood circulation, increasing metabolism between blood and tissue, promoting tissue regeneration and reducing cramping. It’s also been said that a good 20-30 minute sauna session burns as many calories as a long brisk walk or a light jog.

The infrared heat also produces sweat, and a lot of it. Sweat also has many health benefits, such as fat mobilization, detoxifying subcutaneous tissues, and cleansing the outer dermis layer of harmful bacteria. Infrared Saunas also have a positive effect on our joints and ankles, and can even help to relieve pain in those problem areas.

As you can see the little infrared wave in an Infrared Sauna has many benefits other than just giving us a warm relaxing experience.
