Infected Chapter 2 - The Start
Were at war with them.
I couldn't tell how much hours had gone by, but it was already dark and even the chills of the air wasn't enough to cool me down. I felt light-headed and Amy was feeling heavier by the minute. Suddenly, I heard dogs running towards us and even to my best tries I couldn't run a few steps without stopping.
Amy woke up and looked around and realized our situation. "Are you okay?" she said looking at me closely. The minute I stood up a chill creep over me as I was slowly reverting back into my human form. "Not now" I said gasping for air. I could stay in my infected form for months on end, but I was simply too weak to stay one day or even a few hours in it. She got up on to her own two feet and threw my left arm over her shoulder and slowly walked towards the forest. The dogs grew closer toward us and every chance I had I tried to transform, but it was useless. "Don't try to force yourself, you would only kill yourself or go primal and kill everything in your path" she said and got quiet. I heard about those kinds of infected. Sure in school all infected beings were bad, but these had no morals and ate one another when they saw it fit. Before, I could pounder on it some more she tensed up and I could tell we were close to something.
She hustled me up higher on to her shoulders and slowly sprinted to a hidden hole which was covered by natural stuff and couldn't be found. "What about the dogs? They are just going to follow our scent towards this place" I said trying to make her understand. She looked at me and then said, "These plants will hide all our scent for about a ways so they are probably going to pass through here." I was happy to know that she knew this stuff. She looked down the dark hole and then at me as if trying to mathematically solve something. "I can't jump down with you on my shoulder, so after I go in wait three minutes and fall in here. I will catch you I promise." She said and I looked at her questioning her strength. She saw me checking her out and laughed as she flexed to show what little much she had. I nodded and watched as she jumped down into the vast darkness that was the hole.
I would be lying if I said I wasn't scared to go down that rabbit hole, but in the state I was in it was better than fighting with dogs. After probably four minutes I leaned in and closed my eyes as I fell into the hole. My mind was racing as nothing but death and pain crossed my mind. What felt like days probably took seconds as I fell into hands rougher than I had imagined. I opened my eyes and saw a muscular guy and despite his build he had a friendly face. I could tell he was a hybrid infected for one eye was red and the other was dark brown. "Wow! You look so bloody and wreaked up" he said as he continued to carry me. He turned to face Amy who smiled at me still looking surprised. "We need to get him to Dr. Keil so he can fix him back into health. "I'm okay" I said, but suddenly I dozed off into sleep.
I woke up feeling groggy and painfully weak. I looked around and smelled sterile stuff and antioxidants around me. I woke up ready to fight anything that was a threat. I heard some footsteps as a guy who looked like a bum comes in with one hand in his pocket and another holding a clipboard. He turned and looked at me with surprise and walks up to me. "I can't believe you're up" he said scratching his head. "I heal fast" I told him bluntly and looked around the room.
The walls were made of cement, but the floor was marble like. "Well you don't seem like a hybrid so you must be a low-level percent infected...maybe a second generation" he said checking up on me. I didn't mind him checking up on me he seemed like he had a professional look around him. "No, I'm a ninety-seven pure third generation" I said and he quickly stared at me in disbelief. It was so rare to see a third generation pure these days I guess. I mean you can always find thirds, fourth, or even fifth generation hybrids, but never a pure one. "That's very interesting. At the moment you are the third of your kind that reside here that is not so keen on violence" he said making me stand. Amy came through the large wooden door and saw me and her eyes widened. "Yo" I casually said striking a peace sign near my forehead. I looked at the guy and suddenly put two together. "You're the Dr. Keil right?" I asked not sure if I were straight with anything. He nodded and laughed to himself. "I'm one of the infected doctors you will probably ever know" he said poking me in the head. "Can he be discharged I have to take him to meet Chandler" she said grabbing hold of my hand. Before I could question him on anything she rushed me out the doors.
The buildings around here looked very old in a sci-fi kind of way. "How did you all make such a place underground?" I said looking at all the people who resided here. She laughed and looked at me with a face that said 'you're so stupid' and I guess I was in some way. "This place wasn't built by us, but by warriors of some sorts long ago. We just happened to come across it long years ago" she spoke as we turned a street corner. The place reminded me of the lost city of Atlantis, but I was actually seeing it. Some kids were playing soccer in full infected form and nobody said anything as if it was the most normal thing around. I wanted so badly to join them and show off my skills, but I knew Amy would have some sort of fit. She stops in front of this dome looking place with guards wearing javelins and shield, etc. She climbs the stairs and looks at them and says, "where here to see Chandler" and they stepped aside.
Inside was pretty lit and I looked around and saw someone on the ground facing the other way. "What do you want?" he said still facing a wall probably thinking. Amy walked up and sat near him. "I brought the visitor I told you about" she said and at that instant he quickly stood up to face me. "He seems quite weak, Amy" he said and I don't know why, but at that minute I quickly transformed as he rushed me into the wall. Dust and pebbles plunged everywhere as he held me with one hand off the ground. "Nice speed in transforming" he said and whipped me out of the dust and into the sun lit parts. His eye widened and then softened seconds apart. "A third generation infected" he said smiling to himself. I grinned noticing he was off guard and threw myself into the air. He was ready as he held my fist from hitting his face. "I like you already boy!" he yelled and grabbed me into a lock and plunged me into the ground. The pain was too much as I reverted back into human form and Amy came to pick me up. "Are you okay?" she whispered into my ear.
Everything was ringing, but I was okay so I nodded. "It's nice to see another third generation" he said and held up three fingers. I growled at him not moving from my spot. "What is your name lad?" he said. I took time in answering him. I looked him over and realized he was in his human form, but at the same time an infected which pissed me off. I guess I was staring too long and he laughed. "I see you are over thinking everything, huh?" Chandler said as he walked towards me. I suddenly felt embarrassed and looked away. "Kid how old do I look to you?" he said watching me with these red bulging eyes. I thought about his appearance and no matter how you saw it he was old. "Eighty I guess" I said trying to read him. "You're not even close. I may not be as old as Keil, but I'm a hundred and twenty-seven year old" he said looking at me.
He left my eyes and sat down in front of me and I followed. I didn't say anything, because the void of silence seemed a better answer then anything. He held up his fist and for a second I thought he was going to strike, but he just stared at it and looked at me. "I was part of the first humans, along with keil to take this infected form" he said facing me. "I know you don't know your history, because schools and the government covered it up. Skin disease and such, but those of us who are infected know that it's not true. The plan was to make a person able to become stronger and faster so those who wanted to try were welcomed. I was poor and needed the money, but keil just wanted to see power himself. It went wrong though; all of it went terribly wrong.
Some were in so much pain while others killed themselves to relieve the pain. Those who survived broke out and almost started a whole genocide. It got so bad they bomb the area where even the humans who weren't infected lived. Those who were smart hid and fitted in, others rebelled and died short of the start" Chandler looked at me. I still had nothing to say. Sure it's a surprise hearing it, but so what? He smiled and finished, "Were at war with them."
