Induce Vomiting
If you think that if you to induce vomiting in humans is fun, then you are sadly mistaken. There are reasons why people induce vomiting. Until and unless the reasons are justified and you are sure, do not induce vomiting.
How to Induce Vomiting in Humans
Before you start inducing vomiting, it is important that you make a note of the poison, that the person has swallowed. Do not throw away the container. The container will come handy in case the doctor would want to know the ingredients of the poison. If the person, who has swallowed poison, is in any of the states as mentioned below, do not induce vomiting.
- If the person has swallowed a cleaning product, which contains alkalies or acids, do not try to induce vomiting. These substances can burn the throat tissue, as the person tries to throw up. They may also cause heartburn.
- If the substance swallowed by the person is petroleum based, then do not induce vomiting. The fumes that are exuded, as the person vomits, can cause pneumonia.
- If the person is disoriented, confused or groggy, then do not induce vomiting either.
- If the poisonous substance was swallowed by a child below the age of 2 and does not understand the instructions given on how to induce vomiting, do not force the child to induce vomiting.
- If the poison was swallowed by an adult, then you will have to give the person an emetic, like ipecac, as per the directions on the bottle. In case you do not have an emetic at hand, you can make a solution of water mixed with table salt. After drinking this solution, let the person drink about 5 to 6 glasses of water.
- If neither of the two is a feasible option, ask the person to try sticking his fingers in his mouth. He will have to stick his fingers in till he is able to find the constrictor muscle, located at the back of his tongue. Ask the person to tickle the constrictor muscle. Give proper instructions so that the person does not poke or damage the muscle. Remember, it is a sensitive muscle. Once the person heaves ask the person to remove the fingers from his mouth.
- When the person is about to vomit, ask him to bend over at the waist. It is important to bend, so that the vomit does not go into the lungs and choke the person. If the person is not able to stand, you can ask the person to kneel down on his knees and then bend down, to prevent choking.
- If you do not want to give the vomit to the lab for checking, and if it is possible it is always good to vomit in the toilet to avoid the mess that can be created. If the vomit is to be given to a lab for checking, then ask the person to purge in a bag. In case the person is not located any where near a toilet, then you can ask him to vomit on the grass. So that the vomit can later be cleaned with water.
- After the person vomits, give him a glass full of cool water to drink. Cool water will soothe the esophagus, at the same time it will avoid any danger of dehydration caused out of loss of fluid after vomiting.
- After the victim has vomited, keep an eye on him. This is just to make sure that no other complications have developed.
