Indoor Plants that Grow in Shade
There can be various reasons for why one would like to go for indoor plants, that don't need sunlight. Some people live in apartments and do not have spacious outdoor, some may not have enough access to sunlight, while some may like to have indoor plants, just to improve the interior décor of their home. Fortunately, for such people there are many indoor plants which can survive with minimal requirement of sunlight. Many of these indoor plants are known to have air purifying qualities.
Chinese Evergreen: The scientific name of Chinese evergreen is Aglaonema and it bears silver-green leaves. It belongs to the Asian family and requires very low maintenance. The light tolerance of this plant ranges from very low light to bright light. However, care should be taken that the plant is not in contact with direct sunlight. The basic requirements of this indoor plant is cool ambient temperature, less water and minimum amount of light. The ideal place to keep this plant is the mild light that comes from the north direction. According to NASA, this plant removes xylene and formaldehyde content from the air.
Peace Lily: Peace lily with its scientific name Spathiphyllum, is one of the indoor plants that don't require much sunlight. Care should be taken, that the plant is not placed in direct sunlight, else the leaves of the plant get damaged. Yellow color of the leaves indicate, that the tree is receiving more sunlight than required. This plant requires a heavy amount of water. But ensure that you allow the plant to dry in between the watering sessions. The plant has a pleasant look with white flowers and dark green leaves. Even this plant is an air purifier.
Philodendron: Philodendron is family of plants, which is characterized by its heart shaped leaves. These are used as indoor plant since Victorian era. The plant has very low water requirement and can live without water for days together. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as the plant does good in low light areas. The temperature required for this plant is around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cast Iron Plant: Cast iron plant also known as Aspidistra, is one more popular indoor plant, that requires very low light. Cast iron plant, as the name suggests is a sturdy plant. The plant grows well in all types of climatic conditions. It can stay without water for longer periods of time. The plant is featured by its large green leaves that contain white stripes.
Lucky Bamboo: Dracaena is the botanical name of lucky bamboo plant. The plant is said to bring luck to people around it and hence, the name, lucky bamboo. It is a very adorable plant which grows easily in low light conditions. The plant should be kept in freshwater. The plant grows vertically and looks nice when kept in decorative transparent vases.
