Increased Chinese Military Power Getting Attention in Pentagon
A Pentagon report on the Chinese military expresses some concerns about some of China’s strategy goals, but still points out various positives in the approach of the quickly-developing military.
A recent Pentagon report concluded that expanding Chinese military power could be a positive force as the military balance in the region shifts, but also voiced some concerns. Relations between China and Taiwan have largely improved in recent years, though mainland China is developing weapons that could be used against the smaller country. More noteworthy is the development of longer-range weapons that could shift the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region.
The report further notes that the U.S. "welcomes the rise of stable, peaceful and prosperous China and encourages China to participate responsibly" in international affairs. The notions put forth in the report may seem a bit odd given the recent tensions between the U.S. and China, most notably harassment of a U.S. Navy surveillance ship by Chinese ships this month and continued problems over U.S. weapons sales to neighboring Taiwan. Still, the report may also signal a desire for a reconciliation of sorts between the two countries, as the U.S. undoubtedly sees the writing on the wall with regard to China’s almost inevitable rise in military and industrial might.
The report, also detailing some technical aspects of the expanding Chinese military, notes that "the pace and scope of China’s military transformation have increased in recent years. Its armed forces continue to develop and field disruptive military technologies." Still, some members of Congress, and notably House Armed Services Chairman Rep. Ike Skelton, have noted concerns about China’s ongoing military strategy while at the same time lauding the Chinese for some recent actions. Said Skelton, "I am also encouraged by China’s recent involvement in counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden. This demonstrates a responsible use of China’s military power, in line with its international responsibilities, of which I hope to see more."
