Increase Metabolism

Through lifestyle modification, it is possible to speed up metabolic rate. It is discussed below:
Metabolism is one of the most important processes of the body, in which the ingested food is converted into energy. The metabolic rate measures how fast the metabolism takes place. Slow metabolism means the amount of food consumed is less than the amount of energy produced. Thus, the excess food that is not transformed into energy is stored as body fat, which ultimately leads to weight gain. So, in order to reduce weight, it is necessary to raise your metabolic rate. Speeding up metabolism boosts energy production and depletes the body of fat deposits.

How to Boost Metabolism

Boost Water Intake
Studies show that metabolic rate decreases when the body is dehydrated. To boost metabolic rate, it is essential to increase water intake to 7-8 glasses a day.

Have Diet High in Metabolism Boosting Foods
Eat foods that can positively affect metabolic rate. Having a diet high in fiber is the key to speed up metabolism. Eat, high fiber foods such as vegetables, fruits, wheat bread and oatmeal. To be more specific, following are metabolism raising foods:
  • Broccoli
  • Grapefruit
  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Asparagus
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Low fat yogurt
Protein rich foods, also referred as metabolism boosters like fish, lean mean and whole grains like brown rice and barley should be added to the diet. Also, one needs to restrict intake of foods high in sugar and alcohol, as too much intake can slow down the metabolic rate.

Follow Good Eating Habits
Although, the aforementioned eatables come in the list of foods that improve metabolism, overeating needs to be avoided. Having 2 large meals everyday will not help in increasing metabolism. Avoid heavy meals, instead prefer to have smaller meals 5-6 times in a day. One can have healthy snacks such as almonds in between meals.

Do Not Avoid Breakfast
Skipping breakfast and directly having lunch, actually slows down metabolism. This is because during night hours (11 pm to 7 am), the body does not get any food. So, this nighttime fast brings down metabolism. However, by having a healthy breakfast, the body gets essential nutrients, which helps to speed up the slowed down metabolism.

Exercise
Exercise burns stored body fat as well as increases the rate at which the body utilizes energy. This in turn helps to improve metabolic rate and reduce weight. Exercises like brisk walking, cycling and running increase the body's ability to burn fat, which is essential to raise metabolic rate. A 30 minutes exercise routine consisting of fast walking and biking, is enough to keep metabolism high.

Increase Vitamin Intake
Intake of vitamin B and C can play a very important role to speed up metabolism. Having vitamin supplements in capsule or tablet form is helpful to raise metabolism.

Green Tea
Another way to stimulate metabolism is to have green tea. A cup of green tea not only improves digestion but also aids in increasing metabolism. No wonder, green tea is regarded as a weight loss remedy.

Herbs
Intake of herbs is also useful to achieve a higher metabolic rate. Herbs like cinnamon, ginger and cayenne pepper act as heat-producing agents. The heat thus produced burns fat and increases energy utilization rate of the body.

Generally, usage of diet pills is not recommended, as they can produce some dangerous side effects. Increasing metabolism naturally is the safest way to bring weight in the desired range.
