In the Dark

My first story. I hope you enjoy. Plz comment!
Prologue

I sat in the old rocking chair by the fire sipping hot cocoa. It was to warming me after I went outside in the chilly fall air. My big brother Conrad sat on the floor in front of me with his own cup of cocoa. His light brown hair glowed in the light from the fire. I ran my fingers through it, brushing out the curls. He turned around and gave me a smile. While Mom was upstairs in her room getting ready to go get some fire wood, Conrad and I always sat and waited for her to come down and say bye.

"Come on Blair time for bed." He said. I shook my head with a smug grin and settled deeper into the chair. "Yes, it is, little monkey." Conrad stood up, with the empty mug still in his hand, and picked me up.

"Hey." I giggled. "Not yet. Please just a little longer! Mom's not down yet." I hit him lightly in the shoulder.

"Fine, fine, but just a couple of minutes." He said and plopped me back in the rocking chair. I sat there feeling triumphant when mom came downstairs in a rush. "Where's the fire?"

"Oh, uh, nowhere. I just want to get out there before it becomes too dark to see." She smiled. "Hey, Blair, aren't you supposed to be getting ready for bed?"

"No, Conrad said I could stay up a little longer." I pointed at him when I said it. Mon sighed and shot an accusing look at him. Conrad put up his hands in a I-didn't-do-it pose.

"Uh."Mom sighed. "What am I going to do with the two of you? Well I'll be back in a little bit." She came over and gave me a kiss on the cheek and hugged Conrad. She walked out the door.

"Now it's time for bed, and no ifs, ands, or buts." He scooped me up and took me to our room. As he walked in he pushed our still unpacked suitcases out of the way. We had bunk beds so he had to duck to put me on the bottom mattress. I pulled back the covers and got comfortable in between the warm sheets. "Goodnight Blair." He kissed me on the forehead and left turning out the light.

In the morning I woke with the light from the sun shining onto my face. I peeled back the covers and peeked up at the top bunk to find it barren. Conrad must already be up. I skipped to the drawers to get a jacket because the morning had a certain chill to it. Upon finding a thick one I went downstairs to see if breakfast was ready, though the house was unusually still and silent. The wood stairs were cold at my feet and even with the coat it was still freezing. Mom must have forgotten to turn on the heat. As the living room came into view my brain couldn't process the scene before me. After a few seconds of staring at it, what I saw horrified me. All the furniture was over turned with stuffing flung all around the room. The picture frames and other fragile decor lied in pieces on the floor. The front door was wide open and the kitchen looked like a tornado went through it. Mom and Conrad were nowhere to be found; the bed where she sleeps was unmade and Matt was not in his bunk upstairs or in this horrendous mess. That wasn't even the worst part. The worst was that blood was spattered throughout the room. I ran through the battlefield no doubt cutting my feet on the splinters of glass, but I didn't care; I just wanted to find my family. I yelled their names, but only silence answered me. At that point I panicked. I gulped down a scream of pure terror, but it just bubbled out. I shrieked and hollered, yet no one came to my rescue. Tears streamed down my face at the possibilities that could have done this. Finally when I was sane enough to think, I grabbed the phone from the floor and dialed the number my mom taught me to use when I am in trouble or hurt: 911. A lady's calm voice met my tear filled one. I explained everything along with a broad description of where I was. The nice lady said she would stay on the phone with me till a police car gets here, but I hung up on her wanting nothing more than for this to be some nightmare. I fell to my knees adding my blood to the already bloody floor. I was scared and numb. Giving up, I crawled into the fireplace which was the only thing not covered in blood and cried myself into a restless sleep never to see my family again.
