In Search Of Happiness
There is something surprising about peoples' views and thoughts toward happiness today. Feel depressed? Go pop a pill. I believe we need a happiness paradigm shift.
Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that more and more people these days are desperately searching for the deep, dark "secret" to happiness. – The key thing that’ll boost them up and bring everything in their life, if not in place, than to a rosier perspective. - That one, simple thing that will pull them out of depression and make their lives happy. People are looking everywhere for it, and it is no surprise that more and more people are getting on medication for depression. – Trying to find happiness in a pill.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." - The United States’ Declaration of Independence
There is one beautiful key phrase that always stands out to me in that passage from the Declaration of Independence. – The pursuit if happiness. We are not born with happiness thrust upon us, and it is not something sitting there free to take. No matter where we are from, we are not born with wisdom, we are not born successful, and we are not born with greatness. We do not have a "right" to happiness any more than we have a "right" to be smart. – But the one amazing, beautiful thing about happiness is that we do have the right to work for it.
The right to pursue happiness belongs to each and every one of us, and amazingly, it’s not that difficult to find. Think about it – happiness doesn’t pick and choose, it doesn’t alienate, it won’t judge you based on where you come from. It’s there for the taking, and the only question it will ask you is "Are you willing to work for it?" No one born is given the gift of happiness, but everyone has the chance and opportunities to reach for and attain it. The pursuit of happiness is a choice that we all have.
Happiness expert I may not be, but I am a happy individual, and it never fails to surprise me the strange attitudes people have toward happiness and joy. There are people who seem to believe that they are in some way, I guess because they were born, "owed" happiness. There are people who chase it down through means such as medications, material objects, and even other people. There seems little understanding that happiness is something that must be created, it must be earned. There is no pill; there is nothing and no one on this earth other than you that can accomplish that.
We humans tend to draw ourselves toward the negative aspects of life. We can be an incredibly negative species. There are those of us who are incredible at drowning in self-pity, and we envy and rebuke those who’ve experienced success. Why not celebrate this success though? When a person can shove aside envy and appreciate the wonderful things other people are achieving, it makes it a lot simpler to open our eyes to our own successes. – And accomplishments are one of the most important aspects of being a happy person.
Confidence. – I believe this is the main factor in becoming a happy person. How often do you meet an extraordinarily confident person who is depressive or unhappy with themselves? Those with a good sense of self-worth are far less likely to be depressed, and they are far better equipped for handling life’s little road bumps than someone who has little faith in themselves. And unlike many people seem to think, true confidence does not come from being suave or beautiful. Real, true confidence comes from getting things done. – Setting expectations and goals for yourself and making sure you accomplish them, no matter how large or small. Accomplishing things is not only the easiest, but quickest and most effective way of becoming a more confident person. After all, who ever feels bad when they meet their goal or achieve their New Year’s resolution?
When it all comes down to it, happiness is not something you’ll find in a pill, there is no deep secrets or hidden keys to becoming a happy person. Happiness is a mindset. It is a willingness to smile despite life’s situations, to set up expectations for oneself to build confidence and self-worth. Happiness is something easily attained for anyone willing to put in the effort.
