In Search of a Friend

The anguish of mental illness.
Is your time
So very valuable
And so well spent
That you fail to see
All I need is a friend?

A simple hello
A nod of the head
A wondering glace
As I still lay in bed
As the hour is still new,
But can’t you see,
I have nothing to do?

And all I need is a friend.

I wonder at times
For it has been so very long
Of how careful
I must be
When you do visit
And I speak,
Knowing
If I talk of things so real
And how I really feel
That you would take leave
And toss away the key.

But all I need is a friend.
Will this sadness,
This pain,
This torture,
Ever end?
Oh God,
How I wish
For a friend
When I can’t be
For me
