Read

- Be it a newspaper or a novel or even your study material. Reading helps you enhance your vocabulary. When you find yourself comfortable with words, you won't ever draw a blank or find yourself struggling with words while communicating.
- While reading, if you encounter some words that you've never heard before, mark them.
- Make the dictionary a friend. Look up all the words that you've marked and get to know what they mean. Maintain a small diary of these words if you like.
- Make it a point to incorporate these words in your day-to-day conversations.
- Also give special attention to the little abbreviations written next to these words in the dictionary. They specify if the word is a noun/verb/adjective/adverb etc. This makes you strong on the grammar front and helps you avoid embarrassment due to wrong usage.
- The dictionary also specifies if the word is colloquial or slang, so that you know which words to use and which not to, in formal letters or speeches.
- Most of the dictionaries include tips on pronunciation. Take the effort to work on your pronunciation.
- There are a lot of self help books and websites available which will guide you to work on this.
- Watch English shows on the television and listen to English songs. Sing them aloud.
- Speak to the little kids in your colony. It won't make you awkward even if you go wrong and there's a lot that can be learned from kids rather than elders.
- Watch news channels. They serve the dual purpose of improving your language as well as keeping you well informed.
- Do not rush through the task. Speak softly and clearly. Make sure you say each word clearly as people who speak fast or mumble can prove to be a cause of frustration for others.
- Majority of people do not realize that communication is not only about speaking and conveying your point. Be a good listener. Pay attention to what others say and learn to react appropriately. This will be a major plus above those who only speak well and never bother listening.
