"I'm Waiting"
Love comes to all at some time or another...to all ages.
The little old woman, Leona, sat on the edge of the park bench trying to reach the pigeons. "Come on little fellow.", she said as she tossed a few nibbles from her last cracker to the smallest of the birds. She often came to this park to sit and watch them, feeding them with what little she brought. Jimmy her husband, had passed away last Spring and she would come here to sit quietly and enjoy the calming of nature. They had been inseparable, always going everywhere together. At times she went alone if she happened to go anywhere at all. Most days she would sit in her backyard in her swing that was as old and tattered as she felt. But her favorite place was right here in this park.
~~~~~
As she sat there on this warm Summer day, her thoughts drifted back to the first day she met Jimmy. He was at the corner Drug store standing at the fountain waiting for a cherry vanilla coke. She thought it was funny that he was ordering her favorite soda too. So she was hesitant when she walked up to order. He was so handsome and tall. She looked at his profile and admired his sharp features and full lips. His hair was dark and already graying at such a young age. He turned to look at her and her green eyes met with his striking crystal blue eyes.
~~~~~
As they looked at one another, the blue of his eyes turned almost black. She felt her soul crawl and fall between her feet. The immediate response from her body was obvious as her cheeks turned a rosy red. He grinned at her and leaned forward and whispered in her face, "I'm waiting." She took a step back and smiled sheepishly as she replied, "What are you waiting for?" Again he leaned into her and said, "I'm waiting for my kiss." They were married ten months later in the country church with all their family & friends in attendance. They remained married for 57 years.
~~~~~
As she held Jimmy's hand in the hospital while his body and soul were slipping away, her promise of undying Love was made to him. And even as weak as he was, he looked up at her with his now pale blue eyes and in a whisper said, "Leona, I'm waiting." "Now please come lay with me here." She replied with tears in her eyes, "Yes Jimmy, it's time."
~~~~~
She climbed up onto the hospital bed, snuggled under the covers, and lay there beside him in his arms. They fell into a deep sleep and when the nurse came into check on him, she found them both in the bed. She began to cry, for the position she found them in was one to be remembered. Leona and Jimmy had both passed away in death while sleeping and holding each other tightly & their lips were slightly touching in a kiss. Never had she saw such a thing! Soon the whole nursing staff, doctors, and even some of the patients came to the room to see this unbelievable 'death pose'.
~~~~~
At the Funeral, there was a letter that was to be read to all present. It had been composed by Leona and Jimmy together long before their passing. It read,
"The first kiss is a bonding of two souls." "Everyday since we met, we have never failed to kiss one another." "Passing in the hallways, going or coming, together or separate, this was an everyday habit." "Now we will swear to you all, that what we tell you this day in this letter is truth." "You must kiss the lips of your loved one everyday!" "Sexual contact between two is a wonderful thing." "But God didn't plan for this to happen forever." "Yet the first kiss that bonds the 'Souls of Lovers' must continue in order to keep that Love alive!" "When I first met Leona, I couldn't wait to kiss her lips." "She admitted to me this was true of her also." " So we promised each other to meet in Death with a Kiss."
~~~~~
There wasn't a dry eye at the funeral that day. Later it was told that everyone didn't leave until they all had hugged one another & kissed goodbye.
~~~~~
As for Leona? Each day she and Jimmy meet at the park to feed the pigeons. Some have said they've seen an old Lady sitting on the park bench doing this very thing. Others have said they have seen the both of them there and later found paper sacks with crackers in them. But the experience of a man that found a picture on the park bench, of a young couple holding one another while deeply kissing, was the most interesting. On the back of this picture printed in pencil were the words,
"I'm Waiting."
