They make my day :)
******************************
They tie a cloth over my mouth and I struggle furiously. There were three boys, all only a year or so older than me. The only one I recognized was the one that had delivered Uncle's letter to me. I struggle kicking out, one of them catches my foot with a laugh and they carry me over to the edge of the building, my yells were muffled by the cloth.
"Shut up!" Growls on of the boys, hitting me in the temple. The blow knocks me to the side and I try to stand up straight, one of them had tied my hands with a short piece of rope so my balance was off.
"My Lady." One of them bows before hitting me in the cheek. I stumble again, this time into one of the other boys.
"You think you deserve to be anywhere you want just because your noble blood?" He hits me, one of the boys catch me. They were laughing.
"You don't even have magic, you don't belong here." Bang, another hit to the temple. I fall to the ground, dazed. I try to get up and one of them kicks me in the head, the cloth slips but I could barely open my eyes now let alone yell for help. The letter delivering boy kicks me in the gut, hard. Tears in my eyes, I cough blood, the cloth around my neck.
"Your quite pretty too." A kick to the shoulder. Someone pulls me up. There were rips in my leggings and shirt that I didn't know how I got, but this boy was holding a knife. Lifting it to my throat.
"You still don't belong here, my lady." He kisses me fiercely, I knew he tasted my blood. As soon as he stops he hits me and I was back on the ground. Someone rolls me over onto my back, I spit out more blood. They kneel on top of me, right over my waist. My hands were under me, tied in place. I could barely open my eyes to look at them and when I did all I saw was the glare of the sun, before another boy blocked out its view. He was quite handsome, looking a lot like Leo but with blond hair and green eyes. He was the one who kissed me. The other had short brown hair and was quite large.
"Filthy blood! No magic! Here to spy!" He hits me with each accusation, he had the knife still Then I was vaguely aware of him lying on top off me, pressing down. I could hear the other two boys laughing, they sounded like they were kneeling right next to me but I couldn't see them. I hear a ripping sound, my clothes? And yelling? Desperate for an escape I wrench my eyes open to find the blonde boy kissing me again, even though I was almost passed out. I meet his eyes, why couldn't he understand that I didn't want to be a lady? Why couldn't he understand that I was just like him? Why couldn't he understand that I was no different form him? Why couldn't he leave me alone-? I was aware of blood blossoming quickly from my chest, a boot catches me in the side of the face and I was done, black overtook my eyes and I slipped.
Pain ripped through my body, I must be dead. But I wake slowly, my head lolling to one side, pulling my neck painfully. My eye's felt heavy and I somehow couldn't remember how to open them. My breathing was rapid and cold sweat was on my forehead. I felt out of place somehow, just wrong. Everywhere hurt so much I could barely figure out where hurt most. Although my head and chest and stomach stood out. My shoulder was throbbing. "What's wrong with her? She's all blue looking and funny." I knew the voice, I knew the words but I couldn't figure out what they were saying.
"She has pneumonia, it's from the coma." Says a soft voice.
"How longs it been now?"
"Four days."
"Has she moved?"
"She frowned before." My body felt weak and I tried to tune out the voices around me, focusing on myself. My eye lids fluttered a little and there was light coming in below them, ignoring that memories come to my mind. The boys hitting me, knocking me to the ground and screaming at me. I groan in pain. I remember the blonde boy kissing me, the mail boy kicking me in the guts and the blonde boy on top of me, hitting me and pushing against me while I was down. I remember the knife cutting a small rip in the top of my shirt and the others laughing. I remember one of them kissing me again, I presumed it was the same boy who was on top of me because the pressure built, then someone else kissed me. I didn't respond and they were free to do whatever they want to me...I remember yelling as someone approached, The weight lifted from off of me and my head lolled to the side, limp. There was someone beside me.
"Audra, hold on Audra. Hold on..." His voice seemed to get further away and I wanted to call out to Leo but I couldn't find my mouth, couldn't find my body.
"Audra." This was not a memory, Sito's voice was here and with me now, I tossed my head.
"Audra, you need to come up now."
"No."
"Audra, please."
"It hurts."
"I know Audra, but you need to wake up. It's dangerous if you don't."
"It's dangerous if I do." Then Sito's voice disappears and I was left to my own painful thoughts.
I knew time was passing but I could not tell how much. I wanted to groan, move my body out of it's uncomfortable position. I felt cold, I felt hot, I felt cold, I felt normal, I felt cold, I felt hot. I always felt the pain. I could always hear the voices but they made no sense so I learned not to listen.
"Audra!" Sito's voice was urgent, I wanted to turn away.
"You must wake up! You're in a coma! Listen to me Audra, you must wake up!"
"Why?"
"Because we need to heal you!"
"Get a healer!" I argue.
"We don't have any money!"
"Floorboard under my bed."
"Audra wake up! Audra, wake up!" This voice was no longer inside my head, it was real, different somehow. Frowning, I turn my head in the opposite direction.
"Audra, wake up! Audra, wake up!" The voice chanted, then it shook my shoulders. I cry out in pain. They let go of my shoulders. My head drops to one side, my eyes flutter before opening. For a few minutes it was so bright I couldn't see a thing, when I could finally see a nurse was ordering Leo away, pushing him out the door while he stared at me. I frown.
"Do you know your name darling?" Says a nurse, feeling my temperature. I frown. Why do I have the feeling I should know what she's talking about. She looks at me, concerned, then shouts something over her shoulder.
"A-a-dr-aaa." I frown, that’s not right.
"Audra, darling, can you see how many fingers I'm holding up?" She holds up two slender fingers and I copy with my hand, it felt heavy and weak.
"Good, how do you feel?" I groan in response, even if I could talk properly no words explained that.
"H-ee-l-a."
"Healer? Healers are expensive Audra, we have one studying here but..."
"See-to." The words wouldn't form properly in my mouth, and it took me a long time to remember them.
"See to what?"
"Sit-ooo"
"Sito, you want dedicate Sito?" I nod, it was the only movement I could do and even that hurt.
"Wait here." I don't think I'm going anywhere for a while anyway. I lay back against the pillow, I was sore everywhere and my skin felt prickly and hot.
"Audra." If I could have jumped, I would have. How did Sito get there so fast.
"See-to" My breathing was ragged and I look at him with pleading eyes.
"Heel...ah"
"Healer?" I nod carefully, it hurt. He feels my forehead and his hand felt icy cold against my skin.
"Wait here ok? The healer will be in soon." I nod again ad close my eyes, trying to regain some strength. I actually did feel a little better by the time there was another knock at the door. I felt funny in my stomach and began to cough. Putting my hands in front of my face to be polite because the nurse had just walked in, I pull them away to see them covered in blood. I look at her in alarm, she rushes over, simply wiping my hands and mouth before leaving, I only just realised someone else had come in with her. I expected some old man or lady with long white hair as a healer, I don't know why, so it was a little bit of a shock when a man not three years older than me walked in the door. He was wearing a white shirt and a black vest and breeches. He had black messy hair a few inches long and white skin. He had hazel eyes, like me, and a beautiful smile. He was quite handsome, I was surprised.
"Good evening, did you call for a healer?" He asks, taking one step into the room. I nod, trying to smile.
"I'm Dale." He says, taking the seat next to my bed.
"Au-dra." I smile a little apologetically.
"Good evening Audra, the nurse tells me you have been in a coma?" I nod.
"When did you wake up?"
"To-day." The words came out funny, not what I intended them to come out as.
"Just today, ok. And you have pneumonia?" I nod carefully.
"Ok, to begin, why don't you show me where you are hurt?" He looks as if asking if this is ok. I carefully run my fingers across the bruises on my cheeks. He reaches over to brush his fingers over them, I flinch slightly.
"Ok." I wave my hands around my whole head and he laughs and nods. I had a deep cut, that you could just see above my shirt that ran further down. Colour slowly rose to my cheeks and I unbutton my shirt without meeting his eyes. He carefully gets up and goes to close the door. As he sat back down I show him the long cut that went to halfway down my ribcage. He runs a gentle finger all the way down it, inspecting, it was deepest in the middle and then ran out to a scratch. A slight colour was in his cheeks too, but the only skin I showed was the line down the middle of my chest.
"This probably should have been sown." He glances out in the direction of the nurses before turning back to me.
"Anything else?" I snort. Lifting up my shirt I reveal deep bruises all over my stomach. He draws in a deep breathe, running his fingers over them carefully, muttering something I couldn't hear. Colour raises in my cheeks again, where as colour drains from his. Trying to push the blanket off me didn't prove very product I knew I had another bruise covering most of my right thigh. Dale shoots me a question look, holding up his hands.
"May I?" I nod, half smiling in spite of myself and lay a hand on my thigh to tell him that’s where it hurts, nodding he slowly pushes the blanket down and pulls the too large breeches I was wearing up, colour in his cheeks again. He pulls the blanket over me carefully when he was finished looking at the bruise and I wave my hand over a smaller bruise on my right arm, just below my elbow. It was the perfect shape of a hand, on my skin. He looks at it with a frown before turning back to me.
"It's a big job and I may need to explain some things to you first. Healing is by no measure as easy as it sounds, when you wake up you will still be in some amount of pain. Not as much as you are in now, I can guarantee but there will be a certain...ache over your body, from the process of healing. Healing take energy out of both the healer and the patient and a job this big could cost..." He hesitates looking me over again.
"One piece of gold, two pieces of silver. Oh, and I will need to give you another...check up? in a few days to see if everything healed properly." He holds up one finger on his left hand and two on his right. Smiling, I push down the two fingers on his right to bargain for one piece of gold. Still looking at my body, thinking, he puts one back up.
"One and one." I hold out my hand to shake, and he smiles, taking it. My small, weak tired hand felt lost in his large grip. His hands were large and smooth.
"Do you want to do it tonight or...?" He asks. I nod hurriedly, hurting my neck.
"Please." The word came out funny and odd. He nods.
"Give me an hour to prepare and I will be back, ok?"
"I'm-n not-going-any-whe-re" I struggle through the sentence and he laughs.
"I'll be back in one hour. the hand goes all the way around the clock." Maybe my head was hurt worse than I realised.
"F-oar-ch-imes." He smiles and walks out. I lay my head down on the pillow, feeling pathetic.
Once I started coughing I couldn't stop. I had a coughing fit and it was all blood.
Tears in my eyes I look up at the nurse in alarm again, she wipes my hands gently.
"It's ok, darling. It's ok." It's not ok, it hurt! I lay my hands over my stomach, curling into a ball and scrunching up my face. That was when I spotted Dale standing at the door, watching carefully. Coughing once more, I hold out my hands to him, tears in my eyes, to show him the blood. He watches with a blank face as the nurse takes my hands back and washes them. He walks over quietly and turns to the nurse.
"I don't want anyone to interrupt us until I'm finished ok? Healing takes time and it won't work if I am interrupted." She nods carefully and leaves, his voice was hard and commanding. He closes the door behind her and flips the lock into place before turning back to me. I leaned over, gasping in pain, trying not to cry. He walks to me briskly, taking the seat and pulling it closer to the bed.
"Where hurts?" He asks, laying my hands on my stomach I cry out in pain.
"Listen to me Audra, I can make the pain go away, all you need to do is lie down on your back and lie perfectly still. Can you do that for me?" It hurt to straighten out but I carefully lay my head down on the pillow, hands still on my stomach. My eyes were wild, looking at him. The pain was excruciating, my breathing was rapid and uneven. He takes off his vest and unbuttons his shirt a little, looking nervous, he flexes his fingers.
"Lie still, it will be over soon. And if you are coughing blood when you wake up, that’s ok, it might still be in your system, but that’s ok." He gently lays two hands over my collar bone and chest and closes his eyes.
After that I don't remember much. I remember feeling him inside me, like his spirit or something. I could feel him watch the memories inside my head, wincing at my pain, wondering how I stood it. But it was like I was asleep and he was in my house watching my life flicker by. He didn't know I was there. I could feel a kind of...golden light? That what it felt like, a warmth, spread through me but that was really all I remember. Then I was waking up in the hospital bed, lying on my side. A slow ache spread over my body and my head throbbed. Dale was gone and no one else was here.
