I'M A SURVIVOR Chapt. 3
uh-oh
I was walking up the hill slowly when I heard the first scream, I whip my head around, fire was everywhere. Then they were chasing me from behind. I could hear their cruel laughs and I saw flashes of the men’s faces in tho firelight. They were young and it was so clear they may as well have written it on their faces. They weren't going to kill me, they were going to keep me, as a prize to push around and bully. They only kept females as prizes. Trying to flee I tripped rolling down the hill to land in the bushes. The smell of burning flesh stung in my nose and I tasted bile in my throat. I watched people I knew being dragged away, shot in the chest and killed while begging. The pirates had no mercy. I watch them count the bodies, my parents lay slain in their beds and I sat in the back of a cart, covered in mud, shivering.
I wake up with a gasp, fighting against my blanket trying to get free. I almost fall out of bed when I do, crashing into my table. I swing my legs over the edge, blinking furiously as I try to get the image of fire out of my mind, screams still echoed in my ears. And as I took a deep breath in through my nose, I could still smell the burning flesh and hair. I had kept those memories locked up but having them flow out suddenly I did not know how to re-contain them. Ripping myself from the bed I struggle into my clothes from the day before and flee the silent house noiselessly. Sitting in a tree far away from any of the buildings I allow the tears to flow, sniffing quietly. I missed my parents so much and I would give anything to be watching this sunrise from my window at home. But I wasn't, instead I was watching as magical beings trimmed their gardens, sew their gowns and worked their metal. No one spotted me up the tree. I stop crying but wait for a while so my eyes weren't red or puffy. After the tenth bell chimed I slowly climb down the tree and walk back to the small cottage.
When I enter I see the boys getting up, having just finished their morning meditation in the dining room. I knew Sito would punish me for having missed it but at the moment I didn't care, my thoughts were preoccupied by my parents.
"Where have you been?" I could feel many gazes on me, especially Sito's hard gaze, as I reached the bottom of the stairs, it was Oliver who spoke.
"Out." I grumble, hoping no one heard the quaver of my voice I stomp up the stairs and close my bedroom door a little harder than necessary. A quick look in my small piece of mirror told me my eyes were only slightly red, probably not enough for any of the guys to notice. Laying the mirror back on top of the draws I realize that when I crashed into my table early this morning I knocked my oil lamp over, it was empty but I pick it up and put it straight. I start to make my bed and a moment later Sito walks in, closing the door behind him. I keep making the bed.
"I am a Dedicate here at this temple Audra. But has anyone actually told you what powers I possess?" I shake my head, tucking in the blankets.
"I possess the power to walk through other peoples dreams as I wish." My hands freeze in place. "And I was wandering through the sleep of my students last night when I happened to come across some rather disturbing images." He formal tone continues and I slowly continue my work.
"You are the last survivor of the Bermington massacre?" He asks quietly.
"So what if I am? Not like that makes any difference." I wanted to hiss at him to stay out of my sleep but I bit my tongue. He sighs.
"Audra..." He sounds exasperated. I whip around, arms folded, and wait.
"What?" I shout finally, when he doesn't speak. "So my family is dead! I'm a little traumatized! What do you care? You can just send me away when you get sick of me! It doesn't matter what I think!" My voice was loud, and for the first time since I had met him Sito raised his voice too.
"I would never send you back there and you know it! I care for you and you know it! You belong here now whether you want to or not!"
"I don't belong here! I don't have any magic! It's not like anyone would miss me if I was gone! No one would know the difference!" I scream, his face goes red.
"Get out!" He bellows, pointing towards the door. Tears spring to my eyes and they start to stream down my cheeks. I race to the door and out of the house. I ignore the boys shocked faces and continue
I don't go back for Midday. I don't go back for dinner. I hid, all day long, in the top of the clock tower. No one bothered me up there and I watched until the wee hours of the morning until the last light went out in the cottage. I couldn't sleep. I just couldn't. And before I knew it the sky turned grey, then pink, the sun was blazing overhead. I don't go back for morning meal, I don't go back for Midday or dinner and when I watch the boys cross to the baths at night, I could not spot Sito among them. Before the boys came back from their bath someone entered the clock tower to speak to me.
"I had a very distressed Dedicate contact me today, he was missing his favorite student." Viola says casually.
"I'm not his favorite student." I argue, looking out the window. I'm not a student at all.
"He even called in a favor, to have one of the other Dedicates locate you." I don't reply. She sighs and sits down next to me.
"What happened?" She asks in an exasperated voice.
"Nothing, we fought and he yelled at me to leave so I did."
"Sito doesn't yell." She brushes off.
"Wanna bet?" I mumble.
"He actually told you to leave?" She asked, sounding dubious, I look at her for a moment, I figured she had earth magic for she was always smudged with dirt and tanned from the suns rays. I look out the window again.
"No, he told me to get out. Is there a difference?" I ask, she doesn't reply.
"Why did you fight?" I hesitate.
"It's a long story." I say looking the window, watching the boys walk down the path.
"We have plenty of time." I hesitate again.
"I don't want to say." I whisper, she doesn't push it. She hauls herself up and offers me a hand.
"Come on." I don't move. She sighs.
"Audra." She says in a dangerous tone, ignoring her hand I stand up straight and brush myself off.
"How do I look?" I ask, holding out my hands.
"Apart from the circles under your eyes like a lady." She mumbles setting off, I smile at the Irony. We had barely taken two step when Viola fell. It was dusty up here with several things littering the barely walked floor, she tripped on a box and fell scraping her hand.
"Donkey Dung." She mutters as small beads of blood appear. I reach out for her hand.
"Here, let me have a look." I place her hand in mine, running my fingers over it to inspect the damage, it was only a shallow scrape but once my hands touched hers it slowly began to heal until there was nothing left but blood, the skin was healed. I gasp and let go.
"That wasn't me!"
"Yes it was!" She objects, looking at her hands in shock.
"No it wasn't!"
"Yes it was!"
"No it wasn't!"
"Yes it was!" I pause.
"No it wasn't!" A storm was forming outside as we head back to the cottage in an awkward silence and she steps through the door before men, Oliver, Leo and Sito were at the table, Leo and Sito reading and Oliver fiddling with some string.
"Dedicate Sito. A word please." Viola's voice was hard. "In private." Sito stands up, looking at me with a frown as I push past Viola and escape to my room.
Sitting at my window ledge, looking out into the rain and listening to the thunder I sigh. This was not me! Maybe I had a spell on me! Or maybe I was dreaming or, or...I soon run out of excuses as the rain gets heavier. Suddenly lightning strikes a nearby tree and it falls in slow motion onto the wall of the temple. I look at it plainly then gasp as I had seen this image before! I can see the future and heal! Something was definitely going wrong inside my head. I feel nauseated. I slip into bed, my lamp already out and lay thinking about my family. I was of noble blood, which I had come to learn the despised here. Even if you did not pull rank they hated you for just being here. I sigh and roll over into an uneasy sleep.
I wake with a knock at the door, my training kicked in.
"Enter, please." I say in a polite voice. The door only opens a crack, it was Joseph.
"Just came to tell you it's only one stroke until midday."
"Oh! Err, thanks Joseph." He nods and the door closes. I let my head fall back to the pillow with a groan. Pulling out long black dress that had a tight corset type bodice and a flowing skirt and green lining I pull it on. The corset was made to outline my...chest area. With a sigh I pull it tight and tie a bow behind my back. Quickly pulling a brush through my hair and pulling it into a braid that went halfway down my back. Some shorter strands fell out and framed my face and I tucked them behind my ear annoyingly. I wash my face and rummage through my dresser, trying to remember where I put those handkerchiefs, that was when I find the medallion I had, until now, forgotten about. I wrap it up in a handkerchief and slip it into my pocket, thinking I will ask someone about it later. I walk out of my room, closing the door behind me and head down stairs for midday.
After Midday I was in the kitchen, dong the dishes so they would be drier when Leo put them away. I walk back in, wiping my hands together. They were talking and passing around a silver medallion the same size as mine. I had no idea what it was.
"Hey I have one of those!" I exclaim, taking my seat back at the table. All heads turn to me but no one says a word.
"Yeah, but mines gold." I continue, taking it out of my pocket and unfolding the handkerchief around it and holding it out in my hands for everyone to see. Without a word Sito stands and walks around the table, carefully lifting up the gold medallion and turning it over. His eyes grow wide.
"What-?" I start before Sito grabs be my the wrist and starts dragging me out of the house, I don't resist but I shoot a questioning glance at the boys still around the table. No one answers.
I was in trouble.
