Ignorance is Bliss - Chapter 3

Remember! Liam grew excited but it died as he thought into it further. If he had done what they had said he did, would he really want to remember? But what if he didn't remember? The thought of not knowing killed him. I'd rather know.

"You're going to help me remember if I killed that girl?"

Dr. Amway and the man he decided to call Commander Asshole, gave each other a look. Hers was smug and his was aggravated, as usual. Liam tried to back up a step but the two men holding him gripped him harder and jerked him forward. Violence and beatings usually ensued that look and the last thing that Liam wanted was more beatings.

A few months ago, when Liam was arrested, Commander Asshole had purposefully broken Liam's arm while handcuffing him. Every time he was called in for questioning, the commander always made sure to hit that arm and even re-broke it a few times until he was suspended until Liam's arm healed. The commander was also the one who had been in charge of his torture although it didn't take much for Liam to pass out from that. He wondered if this doctor was going to torture him as well. Scared, he looked around but didn't see anything that looked like torture devices.

"How are you going to do that?"

Dr. Amway instantly knew what he meant. "Relax; I'm not going to torture you Liam. My methods are less..." She looked at the commander, "Barbaric."
Still, Liam was scared; he could never underestimate him.

"And," she added, "We can get started once these people leave." This dismissal was clear and with a hand signal from Commander Asshole, the men holding him hacked off and filed out of the door. Without another look at the doctor, Commander Asshole walked to the door, roughly hitting Liam's shoulder on the way.

"Commander, hold a minute please." He turned back with another impatient expression. "I need you to remove the restraints."

His face turned dumbfounded. "You want me to take restraints of hands that murder?"

"As I've already pointed out, he is not a killer right now."

"I have orders to keep them on."

"And I have left to do whatever I deem is necessary to get him to remember."

The commander knew he would lose the argument and went ahead, removed Liam's handcuffs and stomped out of the door.

Liam relaxed a little.

"Now, come with please," she held out her hand.

Liam slowly and warily walked towards her and stopped about a yard away. The doctor sighed and dropped her hand. "No, you wouldn't trust me, would you?" She didn't wait for him to answer before turning around to where the comfortable chair faced each other. She moved them a little farther apart before sitting in one of them and then gesturing him to do the same. Liam took the chair and winced as his hands brushed the fabric of the chair.

"Shit, did he do that?"

Liam shook his head. "Do you want to tell me what happened to them?"

He looked at his hands; they were swollen, green with bruising, and the skin split into large, healing gashes on the outer pinky-side. All of his knuckles were broken, swollen to twice their size, and busted open. "I, uh, punched the door."

She raised an eyebrow. "More than once, it seems. It looks like a hammer and a box-cutter went to work on your hands."

He shrugged.

"Do you want me to call a doctor in here to fix that?"

"You're not that kind of doctor?"

"No, I'm a psychologist. A doctor of the mind."

She called the doctor in and Liam sat quietly while the doctor cleaned and bandaged his hands.

When he left, Liam cut to the point. "What are we doing?"

"I am going to help you retrieve your memories through hypnosis."

"Hypnosis?"

"Yes. I will put you into a kind of trace and help you to recall the memories."

"Will I be talking to you through this?"

"Not this kind of hypnosis. I'll be giving you relaxers to keep you calm. It will slow your brain functions so you won't really be able to."

Liam nodded. "Let's get to it then."

"Alright. The relaxer as a liquid."

"I have to swallow it?" That's not going to taste very good.

"No, it has to be injected into your bloodstream."

He paled at the thought of a needle. He'd seen plenty of those; felt plenty.

I'd rather know.

"Okay."

Liam reclined back in his chair and squeezed his eyes shut as she injected it. It stung and he almost freaked out but the relaxer worked instantly.

He opened his eyes and Dr. Amway was sitting across from him again with a clipboard in her hand. "Close your eyes." He did.

"Clear your mind. Don't think about anything."

He did.

"Take a deep breath and listen to my voice."

He did.

"December fifteenth, Elena Devereux..."
