Icing Recipes Without Powdered Sugar

Homemade Icing Recipes Without Powdered Sugar

Making different varieties of icing at home is not something very difficult. You can make them to frost over cakes, biscuits, cookies, and brownies. Keep the substitutes of confectioner's sugar ready before making the icing.

Vanilla Icing
Ingredients
  • All-purpose flour, 2 tsps
  • Vanilla, 1 tsp
  • Milk, ¾ th cup
  • Brown sugar granules, ¾ th cup
  • Butter, ¾ th cup
  • Salt, 1 pinch
Preparation
  • Mix flour and milk in a bowl to form a smooth paste.
  • Now boil the mixture over low flame. Add extra milk if required. Stir it constantly to form a thick paste.
  • Place it in an electric mixer and then add butter to it.
  • Sprinkle salt and add brown sugar to the mixture. Stir till the granules melt completely and then beat it for sometime.
  • Add cold milk to the paste. Stir little till it becomes fluffy and light.
  • Finally add vanilla and then frost it on a double layered cake.
Chocolate Icing
Ingredients
  • Butter, 1 cup
  • Cocoa powder, 2 tsps
  • Milk, 3 tsps
  • Vanilla extract, 1 tsp
  • Brown sugar granules, 1½ cup
  • Instant coffee powder, 2 tsps
Preparation
  • First melt the butter over low heat.
  • Combine cocoa powder and instant coffee with butter. Keep stirring so that the ingredients blend properly in butter.
  • Now add milk and brown sugar to form a smooth paste. Beat the mixture to get the desired consistency.
  • Add vanilla extract and stir well. This completes the icing.
  • Spread the chocolate icing over cakes and cookies.
Buttercream Icing
Ingredients
  • Unsalted butter, 3 cups
  • Salt, ½ tsp
  • Egg yolk, 3 (optional)
  • Milk, 5 tsps
  • Brown sugar granules, 3 cups
  • Melted chocolate, 5 tsps
  • Baking soda, 1 tsp
  • Vanilla extract, 1 tsp
Preparation
  • Beat the butter in a bowl till it becomes soft. You can also heat for a while if it's frozen.
  • Add brown sugar, melted chocolate and salt to the butter and continue beating till they blend smoothly.
  • Now combine the egg yolk and beat once again to form a fluffy mixture.
  • Add milk to make the icing smooth and soft.
  • Cover the icing with a damp cloth for sometime.
  • Remove the cloth before topping on cakes.
Fondant Icing
Ingredients
  • Cold water, ¼ th cup
  • White corn syrup, ½ cup
  • Brown sugar granules, 1 lb
  • Glycerin, 1 tsp
  • Flavoring agents, vanilla/chocolate powder/melted chocolate, 1 tsp
  • Unflavored gelatin, 1 tsp
Preparation
  • Sprinkle gelatin in a bowl of cold water and allow it to stand for 5 minutes. Place it over low heat and stir instantly so that the gelatin dissolves.
  • Transfer the brown sugar in a large bowl and form a well in the middle.
  • Add glycerin and corn syrup into the well without mixing, and then pour the hot liquid gelatin.
  • Now mix it very smoothly with the help of an oiled spatula.
  • Add the flavoring agents and blend them till the mixture stiffens. Knead it and mix the sugar.
  • Grease a container with little oil and then transfer the mixture on it. Heat it openly till the fondant icing acquires the color of clay.
  • You can make different shapes out of it and then wrap with a plastic. Keep it inside refrigerator.
  • Take it out after 20 minutes and use them as icing over cakes.
Note: You can replace brown sugar granules with jaggery and honey.

An icing recipe without powdered white sugar is undoubtedly healthy for everyone.
