I Spy - Chapter 8
I must fallen to sleep, because when I woke up Will was leaning over me, stroking my hair and reading a book with his free hand. I groaned and sat up, my back was sore and stiff. "Don't move sweetie," he ordered as he handed me a drink for my parched lips.
"Thanks," I murmured as I sipped it. "How's Robert?" I dared to ask. Will shrugged. "He's still in the cells," he told me. "I have a mission tonight, I'd like you to be my partner. Mira's joining us as well with Valencia as his partner," Will exclaimed. I shook my head and pointed at my back. "I checked it, its almost healed it's just stiff," he told me.
"So you'll come?" He asked eagerly, stroking my cheek. I sighed. "Do I have a choice?" I asked. He shook his head and I glared at him. "I'll come for you later, but rest for now," he told me as he made me lie down again. I closed my eyes and managed to nap for a couple more hours, then Jamie brought me some lunch and sat with me, chatting and apologizing for letting Robert get me.
"Will didn't hurt you did he, about letting me in the garden alone?" I wondered. He shook his head. "He told me you could be very persuasive and believed you could have made any man let you go into the garden alone," he nodded triumphantly. I laughed. "Sometimes he flatters me," I said.
Jamie smiled and pulled out a deck of cards, spreading them across my duvet. "Want to see a magic trick?" He asked. I nodded and he started telling me to pick cards and cut decks. Eventually, he guessed the card I'd been thinking of and I smiled gleefully. "Teach me," I pleaded.
"Sorry but a magician never reveals his secrets," Jamie told me. I sighed. "I've got to go on a mission tonight, with Will as my partner," I shrugged. "Then you're in safe hands, he's the best partner to have," Jamie told me firmly. "I'm just worried, if I muck it up, everyone will hate me," I sighed, staring down at my hands.
"I thought you hated it here," he frowned. "I don't know, you've all been so nice, well except for Valencia," I shrugged. "So you want to stay here," he grinned. I rolled my eyes. "I just don't want everyone here to hate me, if I've got to be kept hostage here," I told him. He smiled and stood up.
"Well, I better go," he told me. "Fine, leave me alone in boredom," I joked. "I could stay if you request it," he smiled. "Stay," I whined, patting the duvet. He flopped down beside me and we ended up watching a movie together, we were both laughing loudly till Jamie immediately sobered up and jumped off the bed. I looked to the doorway and caught sight of Will.
Not looking in the least bit amused and looking very dangerous, dressed in black. He chucked some clothes down on my duvet. "Get changed, you've got five minutes," he ordered, looking at his watch. Jamie gave me a small smile and slipped out the room, probably for the best.
I took the clothes and changed in the bathroom. "You were six." Will said dryly as I tied my hair back into a bun. "Jeez, calm down," I snapped. He glared at me then, shutting me up. He pointed out the door and signaled me to go down the corridor. I did and he followed, tense and aggravated.
I sighed. Why was he being so hot headed and annoyed? We arrived in reception and Mira stood with Valencia. "Hey Will," Valencia giggled, waving a manicured hand, now covered by a black glove.
"Here," Will said, dishing out maps. "This is The Duke of Paisley's manor house, he has a safe, containing stolen diamonds, we have to find it and crack it open while he's sleeping," Will stated as we all headed outside and into a blacked out car.
I studied the map, there was a black dot, signaling where the safe was and I traced the path, me and Will would be taking, whereas the girls would be going round the other side of the house. "How long till we get there?" I asked. "An hour" Valencia informed me with a smirk. I sighed and closed my eyes.
"Were here," Mira exclaimed. Will grabbed my upper arm. "Now you listen to my command and follow my lead," he snarled, pushing open the door and dragging me with him. He crept across the lawns and to the right side of the house, where he pushed open a window. He got through easy enough and I struggled through after him.
Will put a finger to his lips as we both heard the sound of a distant hoover from a maid. Then we headed up a huge wooden staircase and Will pushed me back against the wall, shoving a hand over my mouth, as we heard voices on the top of the stairs. They soon dispersed and Will carried on up. He led the way along the upstairs and finally stopped outside a room. He pushed open the door and we both tiptoed inside.
I shut the door behind us and Will headed to the far side of the room, laying on the floor and pushing the safe out from under the bed. I jumped as I realized the Duke was sleeping in the bed. Will started connecting something to the lock on the safe. 'Watch he doesn't wake up,' Will mouthed at me before turning back to the safe.
I sighed and leant against the wall, watching the pile in the middle of the bed. I was guessing the girls were just back up, in case we got into trouble. I heard the pop of the safe door open and winced, expecting the Duke to wake. He didn't and I let out a breath of relief. Then I felt it.
The tickle in my throat, I had to cough. Will eyed me up and down then turned back to the safe again, pulling out the diamonds and pushing them in a bag. As he stood up, I coughed.
The Duke sat up in bed and rubbed his eyes, his eyes adjusted to the darkness and he spotted us. "Run" Will commanded, he made it to the door first and pulled it open. I was about to follow but felt a tight hand seize my wrist and pull me back.
"Not so fast," he cried as he flicked on the lights. He thrust me back against the wall, pushing my face against it and crushing it into bricks. I groaned and tried to push away, but he was too strong. "Let go of her, or I'll shoot," came Will's voice.
"Do it and I'll stab her in the back," the Duke snarled, I felt a sharp point on my sore back and my muscles twitched. "She's a new one at this isn't she?" The Duke stated, turning me around to see my face. He watched me and raised an eyebrow.
"Your far too pretty to be doing this dirty work," he told me with a harsh smile as he trailed the knife down my neck, not hard enough to cut me but to make me shudder. "You like her?" The Duke asked with a laugh. Will's jaw muscles leaped with the anger he was holding in as he aimed the gun.
"Please let me go," I pleaded. "No way, I want revenge," the Duke snapped, then I felt the sharp metal pierce my skin at my side and I let out an ear splitting scream.
Following my scream was a single gunshot, that didn't get me but my captor. I stared at his body, the first murder, I'd witnessed. Will advanced towards me and I stepped away. "You killed him," I gasped. "Scarlett" Will said, holding his arms out for me.
I felt my vision go blurry. "You're in shock," Will told me as I fell to the ground, darkness suffocating me.
"Thanks," I murmured as I sipped it. "How's Robert?" I dared to ask. Will shrugged. "He's still in the cells," he told me. "I have a mission tonight, I'd like you to be my partner.
