CHAPTER 39
(4 MONTHS LATER)
I was in labor for 18 damn hours. Sure, this baby is strong and all, being half human but she was very stubborn, just like me. Damien had been right.
Damien had booked me a private room as well as in a private hospital since well according to normal humans, my baby's birth wasn't normal. Being three months early and all. Normal doctors would call it 'very premature' and keep my baby in the incubator for how long.
It was a natural birth. Everybody's heard the part about labor being the most difficult thing a woman has to go through. Yeah, well those people don't know what they're talking about. It's like taking a vacation for a day in hell (not that anybody would). You die, spend a day in hell and then come back to life. After that, you make a promise to yourself that you are never dying or you're changing your life around for the better in order to get sent to heaven. That's how it is. I made a promise to myself that from now on, there are no more babies. I'll live with one, thanks.
AND people say that giving birth when you're older is a bit easier? Yeah, no. I'm twenty-four, how much older do I have to be??
After my beautiful baby had been born, they had taken her to run some tests just to make sure she was all right.
Damien had been with me the whole time. He was trying to calm me down while rubbing my shoulders. No massage was going to help me at the moment though. I wanted to see my baby girl. I was going to go crazy if they didn't bring her back to me. How long does it take to run some stupid tests? I was going to jump out of my bed, run down the hallway and find the damn nurse who took her and kick her ass if she didn't bring my baby back to me.
After what seemed like a million years, the door to my room opened. A nurse came in with a bundle.
The nurse handed her over to me. They had wrapped my beautiful baby in a pink blanket.
"Wow." I gasped.
"She's beautiful," Damien whispered.
She was sleeping. Her skin had a red tint to it, probably from the blood. She had short, smooth black hair on the top of her head.
"Hi, baby girl." I whispered. I took one of her tiny little hands in mine. She slowly opened her eyes.
"Oh my god!" I whispered.
There were the most beautiful, biggest, gray eyes I've ever seen in my life. They were more beautiful than Damien's. That's saying something.
"I told you she'll look like you." I said. I almost burst into tears as our baby wrapped her tiny fingers around my index finger. I think I melted.
"Actually, she looks like my mother." Damien choked.
I looked at Damien. He smiled. He leaned down to kiss me as the door opened again.
All the ones that I loved walked in. Jesse, Alexander, Esmeralda, my parents, Jesse's parents, Liz, Rose, Rob and even Damien's father.
"Hey everybody!" Damien greeted.
"Where's my grand-daughter?" my mom asked.
She came over and took my baby from my arms.
"I'm sorry but did I say you can take her?" I glared at my mom.
My mother looked alarmed.
"I'm kidding, but it is kind of hard..." I admitted.
"I know how it feels, baby, I felt the same way with you." My mom said.
I tried laughing but I was really tired.
"You're old now, Mr. Kerié," Rob laughed.
"I guess I am, but I don't mind. I have a beautiful grand-daughter to make up for it," he gushed.
I love you daddy, I mouthed. He winked.
"Hey, Mariah. Have you looked in a mirror any time soon? You're a mess." Jesse said.
Liz, nudged him, "Shut up," she whispered.
"Thanks, Jess. You try going through an 18 hour labor," I muttered.
Jesse laughed as my mom handed her back over to me.
"But it was worth it," I grinned in spite of myself when I saw my baby girl looking up at me with her beautiful face.
I saw Esmeralda tear up. I didn't blame her. Poor thing, having lost her own.
"Do you want to hold her?" I asked. I didn't mind this time.
She mutely nodded.
I gave my pink bundle to her.
"She's gorgeous." Alexander whispered.
"Isn't she? She's part of our family now," Damien said.
I looked around at everybody. This was my family. Not my blood family, but MY actual family.
"Have you thought of a name yet?" Rose asked. I saw that Rob still had his arm around Rose's waist from the moment they walked in. They were really happy together. In fact, they were engaged, while Alexander and Esmeralda were now married. Sure, they had been like a married couple from the start but the world needed to know it. I had been Esmeralda's maid of honor.
"Yes." I nodded.
"What is it?" Damien asked, "Even I don't know. She decided it when we first found out the sex of the baby and still hasn't told me."
"Guess we now know who wears the pants in the family," Jesse laughed.
We all laughed.
"I have to agree with that," Damien smiled. Nothing anybody said could ruin this moment for us.
"So what is it?" Rose asked again.
"Victoria," I smiled.
The king's eyes suddenly filled with tears. "Oh Mariah."
"Mariah...that's really not necessary," Damien choked.
Half of my family looked confused.
"Victoria was Damien's mother's name," I explained.
"That's beautiful," my father said.
"I want to name her Victoria, darling," I said to Damien.
Damien smiled as his tears slid down his face. "Thank you. You have no idea how much that means to me," he looked over at his father, "to us."
I smiled and looked down at my baby.
"Victoria," I whispered.
Victoria cooed.
"I guess she likes it," Damien's father laughed.
"I guess she does," Damien replied.
"I love it as well," I smiled.
"Vicki!" Jesse exclaimed.
"That's cute too," Rose said.
I smiled, "Her nickname, if anything."
"What a happy family," Esmeralda said.
"Yes... all of us...TOGETHER! We're the true definition of a real family." I looked over at everybody, each and every one of them.
We had all gotten teary eyed.
"A great big family," I smiled.
