I Hate You... Sort Of (5)

James and Holly have never gotten along, ever since he dipped her ponytail into a jar of paint in the first grade. Now, ten years later, James is feeling differently now that Holly has the new guy, Erik, giving her all of his attention. Will James win his perfect little pest back? Picture of Erik, played as Ben Barnes.
Chapter 5: Making Friends

I smiled to myself as I slid into my fourth block class, next to Erik. Spanish was rather boring, Kim found another kid to torture during Gym, and Mandi helped explain to me how to find measures of arcs during Algebra 2.

It was a pretty good day. Which meant I needed to enjoy it while I still could.

So seeing Erik only increased my good mood. He noticed this and grinned. "You look like a kid with three magic wishes. Not a bad day, I'm guessing?"

I nodded. "Best day I've had in a while."

"So I'm guessing you're on some sort of painkillers? Because that is a busted lip." Erik frowned, which didn't at all go with his handsome face.

I touched my bottom, swollen lip tentatively and shrugged. "Kim caught up with me yesterday, wanting round two. I took a few painkillers and they work wonders."

"You seem to attract her attention in the most negative way. Remind me why you don't report her." He asked.

"Our moms are best friends and my life is bad enough without my mom being depressed about something else." I said, narrowing my eyes.

Erik didn't ask for me to tell him more - I was grateful for that. He seemed to be able to read people, what they wanted to talk about and what they took offensively. He smiled slightly. "Are you doing anything tonight?"

"Mandi from my Algebra class is going to go over some notes later." I said with a shrug. "Why?"

Erik gave me a million-watt grin. "There's this new coffee shop opening tonight - my dad's the owner. Coffee's half price. We could hang out. Defend you from the evil clutches of Kim." He said it with a grave voice that made me laugh, even though it slightly pained my face.

"Sure. Sounds awesome. I can stop by around six-ish?" I offered.

He nodded. "You know where it is?"

"Yeah - I walk by it on my way home."

Erik smiled again. "Awesome."
