"Now that we are all acquainted we should get started so you can all go to bed. Ginelle, please come to the front of the class. We will start with you, again." Shayne gestured for me to come to the front of the class.

I walked up to him, taking my time. When I got up there Shayne smiled and winked at me. As always, I giggled because I was nervous. I looked over at Derek, who was, at the moment, staring at the floor. I hope he doesn't think I'm flirting with Shayne, I thought to myself.

"Alright. Now, raise your hands over top of your head and recite after me," Shayne said. When I put my hands over my head and crossed them at the wrist, he continued, "Air is the element that surrounds us, it is my sign and I take full responsibility for it. I call wind to me."

I recited the words and the papers on his desk started to shuffle. A cool breeze then swirled around me and ruffled my hair and his. He smiled at me while I stood there frozen. I couldn't get past what I had just done. Things like that shouldn't be possible, although I have heard of things like that happening.

Shayne leaned down to where his mouth was right by my ear and whispered, "Make up a departure and say it. It should disappear when you do that. Got it?"

I nodded my head and stood there for a moment thinking about something to say. I opened my mouth and the words flowed out as if someone else were saying them. "Air, I thank you for blessing me with your presence. You may depart. Oh, and blessed be," I added. I'd watched movies and heard enough people say that when you call the elements you say 'blessed be'.

"That was excellent. You did beautifully Ginelle. We're going to try everyone else with their element sign and then go back to you to see if you can do any of the other elements," Shayne said and motioned me to sit. "Derek, come up here please."

"Good luck," I whispered as Derek passed me to go to the front of the class.

"Thanks," he whispered back.

Shayne did the same thing with Derek, but instead of Air he used Earth. Nothing happened as far as I can tell. However, Shayne had a stunned look on his face and Derek wore a smug smile. Apparently whatever he was doing he knew he could and Shayne didn't know until just then. I have to admit, I did want to be up there with them and feel what they were feeling.

"Wow," Shayne breathed after Derek said his departure. "That was amazing. Please take a seat Derek and Chasity come up."

He went through the other four kids in the class. I watched as Chasity did something with water (I couldn't tell what), Stacy and Clare did something with Fire, and then Heaven made the Air around everyone stir and ruffle our hair.

I wondered if I did that when I was doing my Air thing, and was disappointed when Shayne told her, "That sure was something. One of the most powerful of the Air signs I have ever experienced. You must have had a lot of practice to be able to make it touch everyone in the room. Well done, Heaven."

"Don't worry. You'll get better at yours and be able to do that too," Derek whispered to me while my face crumpled at Shayne's words.

I turned and looked at him. He was looking at me the way no other person had ever looked at me. His look held belief, honesty, trust, faith, and something else that was wiped away with the rest of the emotions when he realized I was examining him.

I mouthed a thanks to him while Shayne started talking again. "Okay, I cannot keep you after one in the morning, so you are all free to leave if you would like. However, I do expect you all to be here tomorrow at twelve-fifteen so we can get an earlier start. Sleep well."

Derek waited while I gathered my things. He was going to walk me to my room when we were stopped by Shayne's voice.

"Ginelle, I need to speak with you for a moment, if you do not mind."

"Sure," I told him. I looked over at Derek. "Go on. I know my way back to the room. I'll see you tomorrow." He smiled, nodded his head and muttered a goodbye to me.

I turned around and walked back to Shayne's desk where he was waiting for me. When I got to his desk he snapped his fingers and one of the chairs scooted back to where I stood. I raised a brow and sat down.

"What do you need?" I asked.

"I need to talk to you about Derek. You see, I know of Derek. There is word of him going around. Not to mention the fact that I know about guys like him. He is a heartbreaker. I really do not wish for you to speak to him that much. He is trouble. And there is no need to object, I know better than you do," he added when I was about to argue.

"Well. It's not your choice really, now is it? I can hang out with whomever I choose to. And if I decide I like him, then that's my business, not yours. Right?"

"I suppose it is. I was just warning you ahead of time. I have grown to be very fond of you over the past few days."

"Well, that's your problem. Just remember, I can be a heartbreaker too. And besides that, I just like the guy and hanging out with him. He's funny. And I swore off guys months ago after what my ex did to me. Don't worry though. Consider me warned," I said.

I stood up without another word from Shayne and walked to the door. I looked back and smiled at him. I was a little surprised to see that he returned my smile. Then I walked out and up to my room.

It was a lot easier to find the room than I thought it would be. I've only been at C.N.A. for two days and I can already find my way around pretty good. When I got to the door I fumbled around in my bag for the keys. That's when I heard someone coming and froze.

I didn't want to know who was coming down the hall, so instead of looking for my keys again, I knocked on the door. Nothing came from inside. No sound, no movement, no light. Maybe Melissa and Riley were out somewhere. I started to knock again when a hand caught me by the wrist.

I let out a shriek and then a hand went over my mouth. I turned my head to look and see who it was. And there he stood, in the darkness, wearing nothing but boxers.

Derek let go of my mouth and started laughing. "Sheesh new girl. I was just making sure you got back to your room. Shayne's a little creepy and capable of a couple things, or so I'm told anyway. You look like you could use some help."

I let out a sigh of relief. "Yeah, I could. I don't know where Riley and Melissa are and I can't find my dang keys," I grunted as I dug in my bag again.

"Here, try these," Derek said, dangling a pair of keys by the face. I looked at my keys and then back at him. I'm sure I looked confused because he sighed and unlocked my door then handed me my keys. "You left them laying on the table. I was going to keep them and let you look for them when I walked you back here, but Shayne kept you a little longer."

I smiled and grabbed my keys. I said a thanks and goodnight and shut the door. Riley and Melissa wasn't there. I assumed they were out and about, doing something fun. After all, bed time here wasn't until four in the morning.

Well, I wasn't sleepy and I didn't have to go to bed. I should go do something with someone to waste time. I turned around and jerked the door open. I looked outside, but there was no sign of Derek. I frowned to myself and sighed. I shut the door back and walked over to my bed.

I grabbed my pajamas off the side table and went to the bathroom to change for sleep.

--------------------------------------------------

When I woke up Melissa was standing over top of me with a huge grin on her face. I wiped my eyes with the back of my hands and sat up. I blinked against the light and looked at Melissa.

"What?" I half-yawned, half-laughed.

"Tell me! I want to all about this Derek guy. You two seemed to hit it off pretty good. So... Is there a chance of a hook-up there?" she practically squeaked at me.

"Uh... His name's Derek Mason. He's cute, smart, funny, and did I mention cute?" I laughed. "He's sweet and all. We did hit it off pretty good, didn't we? But I doubt there's any chance of a hook-up going to go on."

"Doubt that. If you'll let him into your life as a boyfriend, I'm sure he'd ask you out or something! He really likes you, I can tell by the way he looked at you and smiled at you and talked to you."

"Yeah... I'm sure you were just imagining things, Mel. Guys like him don't like girls like me. Well, except maybe when they run out of options. For some reason though, I think he's more of a tall, blonde, skinny type. Not the medium height, redheaded, average sized girls. But then again, he did say he liked red haired, blue eyed girls..." I trailed off.

"See! He does like you! You should ask him out," Melissa suggested.

"No way. I'm so not asking him out. If he likes me he'll ask me out. Anyway, where's Riley? And what time is it?" I looked over to Riley's bed where it lay empty.

"I dunno. She was gone when I woke up. Didn't leave a note or anything." She shrugged. "And right now it is eleven-forty two."

"Well. I am going to take a shower. I'll see you in a few."

"'Kay," was all Melissa said.

I got up and rummaged through my clothes until I found my favorite pair of jeans and a green tee. I went to the bathroom and shut the door. I laid my clothes up on the counter and turned the water on for my shower.
----------------------------------------------

When I stepped out of the shower and had my clothes on I went out of the bathroom and looked at the time. It was twelve-thirty exactly. My stomach started growling. I looked down, rubbed it and whispered, "Time for breakfast."

I got my keys from on top of the nightstand and put them in my bag. I left the room and headed down to the lunch area. When I got down there it was full of kids and a couple teachers that were eating and chatting together.

I grabbed a plate off the stack and went down the buffet. I grabbed some fruit and a piece of toast. I was about to fill my glass up with orange juice when a hand shot out in front of mine and took the juice.

"Excuse me, I was--" I stopped. Derek was standing there filling his glass while orange juice. He looked at me, smiled, and then handed me the pitcher.

"Couldn't resist cutting in front of you," he said.

"Uh-huh. I'm sure you couldn't. That was rude, you know," I told him while I poured my drink.

"I know. But I'm not going to apologize. You can sit with me if you want to, though, " he offered.

"Sure. I have no one to sit with anyway. Every one of my friends have deserted me."

He waited for me to finish pouring my drink and getting everything else. When I was done he walked me back to where he was sitting. He offered me the seat beside him, but I refused and took the seat across from him.

"So, why are you sitting alone?" I asked.

"All my friends deserted me too," he joked.

"Ah. I see."

"Yep. They're going to join me in a minute. It'll just be Shayne and Syris though. The rest are off doing God knows what." He rolled his eyes and then smiled at me.

"You and Shayne are friends?" I asked with doubt.

"Yeah. Ever since last year when we first met. Why?"

"Just wondering. No reason in particular," I lied.

"Okay... If you say so. Anyway, there was something I was wanting to ask you," he said slyly.

"Mhm. And what would that be?" I asked.

"I was wondering if you'd like--" He was cut off by Shayne.

"Good morning," he said while taking a seat next to me.

"Morning," I replied. "You were saying, Derek?"

"Nothing. It can wait a while," he assured me with a smile.

"M'kay. If you say so," I said around a bagel.

I stared down at my food while I ate. He was about to ask me out. I knew it, I just knew it. And then Shayne showed up and ruined it all. If it wasn't for Derek's reassurance, I would have hit Shayne where the sun doesn't shine.

He must have known what Derek was about to ask me too. After a moment of Derek and Syris talking, Shayne leaned down and whispered in my ear.

"I told you. He is a heart breaker. You do not want someone like him."

I stood up with my tray. I started to turn around and walk off when I decided I wasn't going to listen to Shayne. Instead, I leaned down and whispered back in his ear.

"So am I. And yes I do."
