Hypertension Medication

High blood pressure medication and treatment information. Additional information on side effects of hypertension medicines.
Hypertension medication come under a category of drugs called antihypertensives. They cause changes in the body to lower high blood pressure. Even though these medication sometimes involve certain unpleasant side effects, many patients need to use them. Failure to do so can result in strokes, various forms of coronary heart disease and vascular disease.

In order to be effective, hypertension medication must lower the patient’s blood pressure to at least 140/90 mmHg. Medical experts consider this a healthy reading for most patients. However, patients suffering from diabetes, renal disease and some types of dementia often need to have even lower blood pressure readings to be safe. In many cases, the blood pressure must be lowered to 120/80 mmHg.

Often, a single hypertension medication is not sufficient to have the required effects. In such cases, doctors prescribe a combination of hypertension medication. Each added medication can bring the patient’s blood pressure lower by about 5-10 mmHg. Setting up the correct regimen to ensure that the patient’s blood pressure is at the correct level for his or her age and medical condition is very important. This is often not an easy task for a doctor, because many patients already suffer from diabetes, depression or age-related disorders. They must often continue on medication prescribed to treat these problems, too. Thanks to modern innovations in pharmacology, doctors can now prescribe suitable alternatives to existing medication. These do not react with hypertension medication.

There are a number of hypertension medication available on the market today. Doctors prescribe one of the other (or a combination of many) depending on the patient’s specific needs. Among the most commonly used hypertension medication are ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor antagonists, Alpha-blockers, Beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers. In many cases, medical practitioners also prescribe diuretics to reduce the water content in the patient’s body. The reason is that excessive water can put undue strain on the heart muscles.

Once a doctor has prescribed a certain hypertension medication (or a combination of many) he monitors the patient regularly. The patient is also required to conduct self-monitoring at home. If any changes in blood pressure occur, the patient reports these to the doctor immediately. Such changes may be favorable or potentially risky. The doctor then adjusts the hypertension medication to bring the blood pressure back to the required levels.

Hypertension medication alone is never enough to address the problem of high blood pressure. These medication tend to interact with other drugs and the doctor has to curtail intake of such drugs. The patient must practice certain lifestyle modifications in order to derive optimum benefit from hypertension medication, too. A sedentary lifestyle requires the addition of a certain amount of exercise. Nutrition that puts less strain on the heart must replace an unhealthy diet based on fried foods, excessive salt and red meat. Patients who smoke must make serious attempts to quit. Nicotine not only adds too much strain on the heart and vascular system but also interacts adversely with many hypertension medication.
