Hunted

A mafia hit man’s life turns around when his boss turns his back on him and the cops are closing in.
The metal gun felt heavy in my hand as I pointed it at the man. He was cowering in the corner pleading for me not to shoot him. I felt like I was going to throw up. At training they taught us everything about how to do our job properly but they never taught us how to shake this feeling I’m having now.

This is the only way I thought to myself trying to shake that sick feeling. If I don’t put a bullet in his head, then I will get a bullet in my head from my boss. I slowly put pressure on the trigger. It felt like my hand was about to shake violently. BOOM! The gun recoiled but I held my hand steady. The man went limp. I took a quick glance and saw the result of the bullet. Blood smeared across the wall and a hole in the man’s head. I didn’t have time to stand there and feel bad, I rushed towards the door and down the stairs into the car that was waiting for me.

We speed off down the street; it felt like I had left my stomach back up in that room. All I could think about was the blood sprayed across the wall. What if he had kids? What would happen to them now that they don’t have a dad? Damn Fred, I can’t think about that stuff, I wasn’t trained to think like this.

"You alright Fred?" the driver asked snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Yeah I am ok, I’m just thinking about that man."
"Ahh don’t worry about it. He had it coming. Anyways it was your first hit; everyone gets like that on their first kill." I nodded in agreement and turned to stare out the window. The man's face still in my mind.

I woke up from a nightmare the day after I killed that guy. I was forgetting the nightmare faster than I could grasp it. The only thing that stuck in my mind was the cowering man and the look on his face just before I killed him.
