Of course those figures were not as advanced as they are now. Dan Brown's novel "Da Vinci Code", has made Leonardo Da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man" famous. This diagram was drawn in the late 1400's and it showed the male form in two different positions. So the history of the human body diagram goes back a long way.

Different Diagrams

Various diagrams focus on specific sections. For example, one may focus on the muscles, while the other may focus on the skeletal system, while some on the blood circulation system and so on. This is because our body has many layers and systems. Hence in order to know our body better, we learn them separately.

Essential Functions

Head
The human head consists of the brain, the eyes, the nose, the ears and the mouth, all of which helps in the various sensory functions such as smelling, tasting, hearing, and vision.

Neck
The neck separates the head from our torso. It has been derived from the Latin word "cervical" which means "of the neck". Our spinal cord has 33 small bones which are also called the vertebrae. Out of these 33, 7 bones are located in the neck region and this is known as the cervical curve. One important function of the neck is to protect the nerves present between the brains.

Torso
The human torso is also known as the 'trunk'. It is the central part of the body, and it is from here that the neck and the limbs extend. Some of the most critical human body organs are situated within the torso. The upper part consists of the heart and the lungs, which are protected by the rib cage. The middle part or the abdomen area consists mainly of the organs which help in digestion. It has the liver, the large and the small intestines, the anus from where the fecal wastes are excreted, the rectum in which the feces are stored. Then you have the gallbladder which stores the bile that is produced by the liver and concentrates it and produces chyme.

There is the ureters, from which the urine is passed to the urinary bladder, where the urine is stored; the urethra, excretes the urine and also passes the sperms through the seminal vesicles. Finally, comes the third part of the torso, the pelvic region. This has the male and female reproductive organs. The torso of the human body also consists of the major muscles of our body; the pectoral muscles, the abdominal muscles and the lateral muscle.

Arms
Of the two pairs of limbs that we have, our arms form the upper limbs which is also known as the forelimbs. In anatomical terms, the word "arms" indicates the segment between the shoulder and the elbow, while "forearm" is the segment between the elbow and the wrist. But, commonly, the term refers to the entire upper limb, starting from the shoulder to the wrist. The arms help us to climb, and carry out various tasks.

Legs
The legs are also known as the lower limbs and they helps us to bear the weight of the entire body and also help us in moving from one place to another.

Both the upper and the lower limbs have a segment called the palm and the feet, respectively. And they further have segments which we call as fingers and these fingers helps us to grab hold of things.
