Prologue
Staring at the ground, a million thoughts were going through my head, but deep down the words had awoken something unknown. I looked up into his green eyes. "Hey no fair!" Austin protested and I laughed.
"Well move outta my way, Austin!" I replied.
I was versing Austin in crash Nitro Karts. We had just passed the finish line to start the final lap, when the phone rang. Austin answered it then passed it to me.
"Hello?" I asked, as I heard some noises in the background.
"Is this Indigo Bryans?" A woman’s voice asked.
"Yeah speaking." I answered and listened closely to what she was saying. By the end of the call my heart was pounding and my eyes were widened.
"What’s wrong?" Austin asked picking up on my silence.
"It was the local hospital." I said quietly.
"What happened?"
"Mum and dad were in some sort of accident." I choked out. "Will your mum be able to pick me up?" I asked and he answered me by getting his mobile.
"She said she’ll try."
"Text her and tell her not to worry… I’ll catch the bus."
"What about me?"
"Tell her you’ll be here as usual."
"Indy… have to tell you something."
"I’m sorry Austin, it’ll have to wait." I walked from my house to the bus stop. Once I arrived at the hospital I bolted. I walked in and went to the front desk.
The lady looked at me then looked back at her computer and said, "I’ll be with you in a minute."
"I’m sorry but it’s an emergency." I said trying to catch my breath, "My parents were brought in. Please Miss."
I kept raving on and on until a doctor walked out of one of the rooms.
"What’s going on out here?" I started breathing heavily, as my legs went weak. The doctor looked at me as I collapsed.
I woke and found myself in a hospital bed. The doctor was sitting by my bed. I saw his name tag Dr. Westfield. I sat up slowly.
"Well it’s good to see you're awake." He said with a smile I was going to ask how long he had been sitting in the room with me but I decided against it.
"I’m Indigo Bryans. My parents were brought in and I’m here to see them." His face fell a bit and I had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. My bad feelings were always right.
"What happened?" I whispered and a tear leaked out of my eye, because I already knew and I just needed someone to say it to make it seem real.
"I’m so sorry Indigo… you fell because they died."
"NO, THEY CAN’T BE, I NEED TO SEE THEM NOW! Please I need to say goodbye."
I was crying so bad that my hands shook. I brought my knees up to my chest and rested my face on my knees, so my hair split over my face and rocked backwards and forwards, it kept me calm. I felt nothing. I don’t know how long I sat there. My message tone went off. It made me jump, I pulled it out of my pocket, my hands were shaking really bad. I had 3 texts messages the first was my aunt Kayla.
"Hey honey, I just heard what happened I’ve arranged everything, you're coming to live with me, see you soon."
The second was Austin.
"Hey Indy, I heard about your parents and wanted to say sorry."
The third was unknown, Austin’s mum.
"Hey indigo, I’m coming to pick you up from the hospital and take you to my place where your aunty is going to pick you up tomorrow."
My aunty and Austin’s mum are best friends. She only lives a few houses away and I used to live in the next street.
The doctor was still in the room.
My message tone went off. I had two new texts the first was from mum I figured it was from before the accident until I read it.
"Goodbye, sorry for leaving you so soon, I know you’ll do well, I love you xxx ooo mum."
The message was sent at 5:00 pm on the 14.2.13.
The next was from dad .
"Goodbye baby girl, which you’ll always be to me, I love you and I know you’ll do well. I want you to remember the good. Try not to miss us; I want you to be happy. I will be with you in your heart forever and always love you, love dad."
My phone slipped out of my hand and almost hit the floor but the doctor caught it just in time.
"Are you ok?" His voice seemed to be a million miles away, I shook my head. Was it possible that they could have sent me a text message? My message tone went off and pulled me back to reality doctor Westfield handed it to me. I looked down to see Austin’s number on the screen and I wondered what he wanted now. He was in the parking lot with his mum waiting for me.
"I need to go to the parking lot." I mumbled.
Dr. Westfield walked me to the parking lot. When we reached the car, I gave doctor Westfield a hug.
I got in the back, the ride from the hospital to Austin’s was a blur. I didn’t eat or drink much that night.
When we were alone Austin kept staring at me.
"What’s up with you?" Even though his mum was drunk and on the computer blaring music through her headphones he still took my hands and dragged me up to his room.
"Ok I know you’ve just been through something traumatic… but Indy I like you."
"Well duh you’re my friend you’re supposed to like me." I said sarcastically.
"Not like love." He let me see what he normally kept hidden, what he really felt.
"So the flowers, chocolates on Valentine’s day and the card was really, how you felt." He nodded and something twisted inside, I sat on his bed so I wouldn’t collapse.
"How long and why now?" I asked curiously.
"When we first met and well today is Valentine’s Day." Nice my parents died on valleys day. Then it all came back. I remember waking up to the smell of mum cooking pancake and trying to sing an old country song that I had never heard. I got dressed and waited for Austin, who comes over every weekend. Mum and dad went shopping, so dad could make his famous baked dinner. Aunt Kayla was going to come and so was Austin’s mum. Until they died in an accident.
When I finished reliving the best morning gone wrong, I found myself wrapped in Austin’s arms, my head on his shoulder bawling my eyes out.
"Indy it’ll be ok." Whispered Austin his voice was soothing and it made me cry harder. Mum used to say that to me.
When I half woke in the night all I could remember was crying. My head on Austin’s shoulder and him hugging me with one arm. Running his hand over my hair in a calming motion. Telling me over and over that it was ok.
I could see Austin’s shoulder in the darkness and that was all it took to put me back into a deep black dreamless slumber.
When I woke again it was morning. I was lying on my stomach one arm beside me; my head was lying on Austin’s chest and my other arm across his bare stomach. I got out of the bed and all the events from the day before came rushing back and I fell, I almost hit the ground but Austin caught me.
"You're ok?" He asked and I could see he was concerned.
"Yes thanks." He let go of me I looked at him. He was topless and wearing a pair of blue boxes. I stepped away from him. The doorbell rang and we both jumped.
"Indy," he called up to me.
"Coming." I called back.
Aunt Kayla stood in the lounge room.
