Hudson Motor Cars Company was founded in 1909 in the City of Detroit, Michigan
And were made solely by Hudson up until 1954 when the Hudson motor car company joined forces with Nash-Kelvinator Corporation having done so the newly merged automobile company changed their name to American Motors although the Hudson badge continued on some models until 1957.
Hudson was formed in 1909 by Roy D. Chapin Sr a firebrand young exec who had previously worked for Ramson E Olds
The money for the venture was put up by local business man and entrepreneur Joseph L Hudson and for this reason the Hudson Motor car company got its name from the surname of its original financier.
The original idea was to manufacture and and sell a car for less than $1000 and by July 1909 the first Hudson motor cars were rolling off the then small production line. Known as the Hudson Twenty it was one of the lowest priced cars then produced in the united states and was soon selling in large numbers with over 4000 Hudson twentys being sold in the firdt year alone.
At the time this was a new industry record for the fledgling US car industry and spurred on by its resounding initial success Hudson quickly worked on expanding their range of car models. Hudson cars were also known for their innovation being the first cars produced in the US with oil pressure warning lights on the dashboard and dual braking systems
Hudson revolutionary engine was also highly praised nicknamed the Super Six for its straight six cylinder configuration the engine produced more power for weight ratio than any of its rival engines in a similar category.
By 1929 Hudson motor car manufacture had reached its peak with production and sales of over 300,000 cars in one year alone. 1929 also marked an expansion into Europe for Hudson when it merged with Essex motor cars and expanded factories in Belgium and England. At this time Hudson was the third largest car manufacturer in the U.S. just behind Ford and Chevrolet in total production and sales. Through the 1930s and 1940s Hudson continued to be a innovator and have a buoyant market but by the late 1950s the Hudson brand was winding down.
Hudson cars are still revered by car enthusiasts today and those still running and being lovingly maintained by their owners should also be insured with the same attention to detail.
