How to Eliminate Credit Card Debt

Elimination of debts is one of the most important step towards financial stability. With strong will power and focus, credit card debt elimination is not as difficult as people believe it to be. Read on....
Paying the dues every month is the best way to stay out of any debt, credit card debt is no exception to this rule. Not many people are successful in achieving this feat though. We are so used to credit cards, that we don't realize how we spend money until we get the monthly balance sheet. By then, our enormous expenditure, coupled with some hidden costs on behalf of the company, put the debt in a multi-digit figure and starts the process of balancing the debt payment and day-to-day expenditure.

Eliminating Credit Card Debt

The best idea to eliminate something is to make sure that you don't create more. To get rid of your credit card debt you will have to make sure that you don't keep adding to the debt. The next thing you would require is a proper plan to eliminate the existing debt. Make a list of all the pending debts and add the total sum. Arrange the debts in ascending order, with the largest debt at the bottom and the smallest at the top. Once you are ready with this format, you start by paying the minimum payment of the largest debt, and simultaneously try to make the full payment of the smallest debt. As soon as you finish with one debt, you can move on to next debt in the list, and continue this till you are done with all the due debts.

Communicate with the Credit Card Company

Sometimes you are not able to cope up with credit card payments, owing to the financial hardships you face. In such circumstances, it's ideal to talk to the concerned person from the credit card company. Some companies readily put the interest charges on hold for a stipulated period, thus giving you ample time to recover from your financial hardships. Some companies agree to work out a solution like settling the entire balance for a discounted amount over a specific period. That being said, initiating discount settlements may not be an ideal choice for you, if you want to stay away from negative credit reporting.

Credit Counseling and Debt Negotiation

Credit counseling and debt negotiation are two prominent methods to eliminate any debt. In credit counseling, you can approach a Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS), who will decide whether you are eligible for their debt management plan. Once you clear the first step, then you have to make a monthly payment with the counseling service, which will, in turn, make the credit card payments on your behalf. They will also negotiate with the credit card company to bring down your interest rates to make the process of repayment faster.

In debt negotiation, you save a particular amount of money into a trust account and once you have enough money to repay the debt, the company you are working for will negotiate with your credit card company. In this process, you reduce the interest rate as well as principal amount, and hence debt repayment takes less time.

At times you may find yourself caught into dire situations, wherein you need to pay off the credit card debt or else the debt goes on increasing with time, owing to interest rates. In such a situation, you may have to resort to odd methods, such as finding an additional source of income or selling your personal assets or unnecessary items. You can get a part-time job for yourself and use the money you earn from it to eliminate credit card debt. You can also auction some unnecessary items on online auctioning websites to raise some money to pay off your debts.

Remember that being patient is the key to success. You debt has reached this point over a period, and it will take sometime for you to repay it. You need to make a plan, and more importantly, stick to it with great determination. Once you have repaid the debt, you can concentrate on living a life without credit cards - this will ensure that the nuisance of credit card debt is eliminated forever.
