How to Write a Newsletter

Need to know how to write a newsletter effectively? Read the following article for some tips and tricks.
One of the best times I had in college involved a group of guys, some prolific English and a newsletter. (Why? What did you think?) If you've never worked on a newsletter, let me just tell you that it is the most fun activity that you can be a part of - provided of course that you like writing, have a few writing skills and are inclined (heavily or otherwise) towards journalism. When we started out our newsletter in college, we had no clue about the kind of things that go into making a newsletter work. How does one write a newsletter, what is the content that should go into it, how much work does it require... nothing. But once you get into the center of things, you learn a obscene amount of tasks just being on the job and that is exactly what happened to us. And so we learned the intricacies of newsletter writing and, well, came up with many editions of it. Awesome is not the word. So yeah, in what is truly something that I have loved doing and working on, here's a piece on how to write a newsletter and make it work, from experience.

Oh and I almost forgot, newsletters are used heavily in businesses as a great public relations tool. It helps the companies be in touch with their customers and furthers their objective of reaching out to them. Plus it has been studied that a business that publishes a newsletter is perceived as a source that has expertise on that subject. That's another reason for you to learn about the same. Getting to those newsletter ideas then...

Tips for Making a Newsletter

How overwhelming does it feel to be writing a newsletter and making it work from scratch? Very overwhelming. Along the way, you might also face several instances where you want to just quit because something (or many things) is/are not working out the way you had originally planned or hoped. You just have to get over it, because nothing compares to that feeling of holding a copy of the first newsletter in your hands, all crisp and new. Just for that then, persevere and work hard. And to help you out, here are some tips for writing a newsletter and how to make a newsletter from scratch.

Planning the Design
Before we get into the details of writing, we need to understand that writing is not the only important thing that a newsletter involves. There needs to be careful planning about the design as well. Consider things like - Budget (most important factor, on which the rest of the factors will depend), the frequency of the newsletter (will it be a bi-monthly, fortnightly, weekly), the quality of the paper, the printers, the number of copies, will it be a black and white or a colored one. And then decide the name of the newsletter and the logo (if there will be one).

Studying the Background
You need to understand what you're doing here, you need to know the business house that you're writing for it or the organization that you're working for. Understanding the business will let you do justice to the task. To understand the business, if you don't already know what it is, interview the heads and get a complete know how of their business - what sets them apart, what works for them, what are the products that they manufacture, have them received any awards for the same, what are the factors that you need the audience to know about, how will you make the business better by which the audience will benefit.

Newsletter Content
So now the actual part of writing a newsletter - think about what you need to include in the issue - make a list of the events that happened, the new products that were launched, etc. and then decide the topic or event that needs to be given the most importance. Use that as the main or cover story and then relegate the other topics that need to go in as well. You'll need to learn a few editing software as well so that you know how the content should be placed in the newsletter. Also include photographs to make the newsletter more interesting, use interviews, quizzes, a mix of both news and feature articles (in simple and easy language), announcements of events and products, catchy titles, additional links to a website that you might have, editorials, ads and competitions.

It is also important that you allow a forum whereby you get a feedback from the audience and readers so that they know what needs to be improved upon. This will allow for the newsletter to always be appreciated and popular.

And that is all newsletter writing involves. It can be quite tough in the beginning, especially if you're handling it for the first time, but as time passes and you learn the tricks of the trade, you'll find that there will be not many problems to deal with. And that's where you should aim at getting. All the best with the writing then. Good luck.
