How to Use Essential Oil as a Natural Anxiety Remedy

A look into the alternatives for prescription medication, focusing on essential oils. Also a brief guide on the methods that can be used to implement essential oils into daily life.
Many of us aren't aware of it, but essential oils have a physiological effect on the central nervous system. Some may liven us up, give us more energy and make us more alert, whereas other will calm us down, help us sleep and even reduce pain. What's important for sufferers of mood disorders is that they know how useful essential oils can be and how they can be used as a natural anxiety treatment, instead of prescription medications.

One of the big ones for those who find their anxiety hits at night is cedarwood. Not only will this essential oil help to calm the nerves but it also acts as a sedative, promoting sleep and allowing anxiety sufferers the hours of unconsciousness they really need (lack of sleep often makes anxiety symptoms worse). What makes this oil great is that its scent actually mixes very well with bergamot and sandalwood; two more oils which help anxiety.

There are several ways that someone can implement this natural cure for anxiety into their daily life. One of the favorites is to buy an oil burner (usually under $15), fill the well with water, add 3-5 drops of oil to the water and heat from underneath with a tea light candle. As the water heats up it will evaporate into the air, with the scent of the oil circulating into the room too. Alternatively, you can just put 3-4 drops on a handkerchief to smell or add 6-9 drops into a hot bath. If you're luck enough to have someone who will happily give you massages then mixing essential oil with plain massage oil (available at health food stores) then this is a great way to feel the benefits too.

It seems unlikely, but essential oils (when inhaled) actually have a physical effect on the central nervous system. That is, they affect the brain and nerves directly and have lasting effects from minutes to hours. You should be aware that some oils can be quite powerful and make you sleepy, so driving whilst you're feeling the effects of them is not a good idea.

Find out what other essential oils can have a positive effects on the symptoms of anxiety and you want to use them as natural anxiety remedies. There is no need to resort to prescription medications with unwanted side effects when you can treat the disorder with natural cures for anxiety.
