There being several models or avatars of the iPod, each has a different method of resetting or unfreezing it, when the screen freezes and stops responding. In the following lines, you will find clear guidelines on unfreezing an iPod Classic, iPod Touch, iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle.

iPod Classic
First thing to try out when your iPod classic freezes, is to slide the 'Hold' button provided at the top to off position and then turn it on again. This should solve your problem. If that doesn't work, you need to know how to reset iPod Classic.

If it still remains frozen, press down the 'Menu' and 'Select' buttons simultaneously for some time, which will reset the iPod back to working condition.

iPod Touch
The only way of unfreezing the iPod Touch is by pressing down a key combination, which resets it. To unfreeze your iPod Touch, press and hold the 'Home' button and the 'Sleep/Wake' button provided at the top at the same moment. After you hold it down for some time, it will reset the iPod Touch and restore functionality.

iPod Nano
If your iPod Nano stops responding to any actions and freezes, then the best way to unfreeze it is to make it go to sleep by toggling the button provided at the top of the device (also known as the 'Hold' button) and then switching it back on. This may restore the functioning to normal.

If the problem still persists, then simultaneously press the 'Menu' and 'Select' buttons at the front end of the device. As you hold it down for some seconds, it will restart at some point and it will be back to normal working condition.

iPod Shuffle

The best way to break the frozen condition is to switch off the device and then switch it on back again. Nothing like a restart, that can clear out software glitches. If the problem occurs frequently and you find yourself having to administer the unfreezing procedure too often, it is time you got it checked from an Apple service center. The cost of repair can be borne by the warranty for the device, which is provided for a fixed period of time.
