How to Trap a Coyote
Does one need to use a solid and powerful trap to catch a coyote? Actually, no! There is a lot more than that when it comes to trapping a coyote.

There are various ways to trap coyotes that the trappers like to follow. These ways include, using snares, traps, cages and shooting the coyotes. Trapping the coyotes using good cages, is one of the better methods, with least complications. They are also safe, if any other animal gets trapped in it, by mistake. Firstly, one must always master some of the dwelling habits of these cunning animals, which is always possible by watching their every move as closely as possible.
Always remember that coyotes follow the same path, which is their way of keeping a track on any signs of dangers and protecting their group from predators. They usually like hills, so that it gets easy for them to keep an eye on the situation. Like many of the animals, coyotes also mark certain scent posts while moving from their paths and crossing places. Not so life-threatening for human beings, coyotes entirely depend on their sensory organs like ears, eyes and nose to stay on the move. It is also a fact, that they sense some danger, only when there are any signs of danger. If you leave no traces of your existence, then you are on the right track for the catch.
It is very important to have a good set of trapping equipment, before you even think of learning how to trap coyotes. By far, the best trapper's set should always include a hammer, several digging tools, screen dirt sifter, pan covers, beeswax, scent, gloves, kneeling cloth, whisk broom, etc. There are various kinds of traps available for you to trap the coyote, but the cage trap is accepted as the best of them all. Number 3 or 4 double spring leg hold set that comes with the offset jaws, is preferred by most of the experienced 'coyote trappers'! Make sure the traps are rust free and always take efforts to keep them as good as new!
It would be kind of hard, but with a bit of extra efforts, one can easily succeed in finding the scent posts left by the coyote. They generally leave the scent posts by urinating in certain specific areas like turfs of grass, animal carcasses and skeletons, bushes, etc. They also scratch near the scent posts, which actually makes it easy for you to identify their existence. Dogs could be a great help in such cases, so if you have a shepherd dog, your job is half done.
Once you find out some of the scent posts of the coyote, put the trap on that place. You may also put more than one traps, as safer ways to trap coyotes in your farm. For better results, try placing the traps in an open and flat area. Take care of the wind current, so that the scent of the stake could reach easily towards the coyotes. Always place the trap in an upwind direction. Saddles in high hills, isolated land features, high hills, isolated hay bales, pasture roads, trail junctions and livestock trails, waterways, brush piles, fence crossing, etc. are the perfect places for setting the traps.
There would be chances that the coyote might dig out the trapping set and leave you helpless. Without getting frustrated, place the traps in place once again. This time shift them near the original ones. Make sure that the trap you lay is well hidden and clean. Placing a bait is the key and as a matter of fact, placing an old but working clock would also do the trick. The animal would get attracted towards the ticking of the clock. You may also put some dead mouse, gopher or rabbit as a bait for coyotes. Tying a dead fish is the great ideas, as coyotes get really attracted by the smell of the fish.
Also, make sure that you check the track every 24 hours. Once a single coyote gets trapped, there are chances that many of them to follow as then they get easily attracted. Trapper must always be cautious to not to leave any possible traces of any kind of human scent, from smells of shoes to the smell of tobacco. Use gloves to put and adjust the traps, so that the human scent is eliminated to the maximum. There are numerous ways of trapping coyotes that differ as per various trappers. The above-mentioned is the best in the business.
After trapping the coyote, instead of killing it, I would suggest you to call the local animal control authorities and let them handle the animal. This way there will not be any legal issues regarding trapping the coyotes and killing them, as coyotes are one of the endangered species and killing the animal is totally against the law of humanity, though they cause many troubles.
