How to Train for a Triathlon

Many of us like to participate in different races. A triathlon is mainly for those people who like to participate in different races, at the same time. These races are exciting and tough at the same time. You will have to participate in more than one race; hence, rigorous training and practice is required. Consistency should be maintained while training for better results.

Training for a Triathlon
  • Before beginning the training for triathlon, a check up by the physician is a must. It is just to assure yourself that no physical or medical barrier will stop you from competing.
  • Identify the areas where you can perform the best, and the one in which you are the weakest. Accordingly, spend more time practicing for the event you are weak in and enough in the one in which you are the best.
  • You should purchase proper equipment for the actual event and also throughout training, so that you get used to the equipment. The first and most important need if the hour is a comfortable and sturdy pair of running shoes, a bike, which is especially designed for racing and can be ridden fast.
  • You should start intensive training at least six weeks before the actual event. This will help you in progressing to a moderately good shape, which will enable you to perform better in the triathlon.
  • The fitness training schedule should be designed in such a way that you practice at least for 4 to 5 hours a day. You can practice longer than that, however, do not reduce the intensity or time span.
  • The training schedule should be designed in such a way that you get to rest for at least one day in the week. It's a must for the body to recover from the strenuous training. This kind of training will also help you in long course triathlons.
  • Consume loads of carbohydrates, as they will give you the much-needed fuel which will be required throughout the triathlon and also, eat healthy food and stay hydrated.
Gearing up Beginners for a Triathlon
  • First and foremost, decide in which triathlon you want to participate. Swimming, bike racing, and track racing are great to start with.
  • After you have decided on this, you can develop a training schedule. You should first fix on the schedule of the training. You will have to opt for three different races. Try and follow the training schedule properly. Every subsequent week should see an increase in your training hours. It is advised that you don't practice all three sports on a single day. You can practice one sport on one day, the other the next, that way, you can concentrate and perfect each leg of the triathlon.
  • A day before the actual race, you will get the registration pack which will include your race number. You will have to write this number on your arm and leg.
  • If you are participating in the biking race, then a day before the triathlon, you will have to hand over your helmet and bike to the concerned authority in the transition area. Information related to this will be included in your registration pack. If you are participating in a bicycle race, choose one with which you are most comfortable with, among the different types of bicycles available.
  • Make sure that you eat food rich in carbohydrates and proteins on the day of the event. Eat plenty of bananas, oatmeal, wheat bagel, etc. early in the morning after which, you can visit the transition area to checkup on your belongings.
  • Make sure that you carry a helmet, goggles, towel, swimming cap, shorts, shoes, socks, swimsuit, and sunglasses.
