How to Tan: Safe Tanning Tips
Transform yourself from pale to bronze safely.
It is important to first understand the intricacies involved in an act as simple as getting a tan. A term such as SPF(Sun Protection Formula) will be a word we will be coming across a lot. The higher the spf in sunscreens the more the protection. This differs from person to person and is based on individual skin type and how fast it burns. While at this, it is of vital importance to know that sunscreen and sunblocks have different meanings and uses. Available in lotion, oil and cream form, sunscreens have an spf rating, when applied, it reacts with the sun and creates a barrier, that cannot be seen. A sunblock has no spf rating and it blocks the UV rays completely.
With that done, there are a few things you need to know whether you are getting a tan outdoors, indoors or doing it yourself. I am sure you would not like to waste money, precious time and health with things going wrong.
Safe Sun Tanning Tips
A healthy tan is a misconception, as it has been proven that there is a direct correlation between skin cancer and getting a sun tan. But, If you have made up your mind to go to the beach for a tan anyway, it is advisable to carry your shades, towel, sandals, hat, T-shirt, sunblock, aloe and cocoa butter. Oh! Don't forget to arm yourself with this information too.
- Before you go out in the sun make sure to clean your skin. Remove all traces of make up creams and perfume liquids. This is because these products make skin more open to sun burn.
- Apply sunscreen with a low spf before you dress and go out in the sun. Take care not to leave out any areas.
- If you have sensitive skin, use a hypoallergenic sun care product.
- It is advisable to stay out of the sun between 12 in the afternoon to 3o'clock, as the intensity of the sun is at its peak at this hour.
- Keep at least a two day gap between two tanning sessions.
- While going for a swim or playing water sports, use a water proof formula.
- Use a good lip screen to protect your lips from getting burnt or chapped.
- Wear a hat and t-shirt when you are enjoying the weather, playing sports or relaxing on a nice, sunny day!
Indoor tanning methods are available today. These methods are slightly more protective than getting a natural tan as this is done in a controlled environment.
Here are a few things it would be nice to know before you go in for an indoor tan:
- For a better tan use the lamps with low UVB (ultraviolent type B) rays, the UVB bulbs also provide a darker long lasting tan.
- Use lotions which have DHA (dehrdroxy acetone)as well as SPF(Sun protection formula) to moisturize your skin. Using DHA, the tan is enhanced and it also takes care of lotions that have nutrient supplements, These supplements makes your skin glow brighter.
- Protect sensitive areas of your skin that are normally never exposed to UV radiations.
- It is important not to remain inside the bed for more than 10 to 15 minutes.
You could get a tan in the confines of your home too. This is possible with the range of products available, which include lotions, gels, wipes, sprays and even pills.
The tanning options mentioned above all contain DHA( dehrdroxy acetone) which turns brown when exposed to oxygen. This process takes two to three hours and the effects of the procedure last until the skin cells are naturally shed. As these products have vitamins and moisturizers in them, the skin remains healthy, soft and protected.
Here are a few tips to help you while you:
- Scrub away the dead flaky skin as that can soak up the color and creating an uneven finish.
- It is advisable to select the lighter color on the shade card.
- Use body lotion over the areas you want to tan. Doing this will cover any dry areas and provide a smooth surface for the lotion.
- Massage the product into the skin completely. Do not leave excess on the skin.
- Use the best sunscreen, suitable for your skin type along with the self-tanning products.
