How to Tailgate with Your Dog

Who doesn’t love seeing a dog in a football jersey, ready to act as mascot for his favorite team? If you want man’s best friend to join you in the tailgating festivities, make sure you prepare for the day using the steps below as a guideline.

Step 1: Be safe: Before your pup can enjoy game day, he needs to have all of his current vaccinations, as well as proper identification. He should remain leashed throughout the day as well.

Step 2: Dress for the occasion: Although you might want your dog to wear the team’s jersey, if it’s a scorching day, that might not be the best idea. On the other hand, if it’s cold out, make that team jersey a team sweater. The bottom-line; be sure your dog is dressed appropriately for the weather and for the sporting occasion.

Step 3: Food and Beverages: You’ve thought about all the food and beverages you’re going to partake in throughout the game, don’t forget about what your dog needs too. He needs plenty of fresh water throughout the day (surely you can find room in the cooler for some water!) And, depending on how long you plan to be at the event, he might need a meal or two of his own.

Step 4: Food and Beverages again: It might be funny to show your buddies how much your dog loves beer and chicken wings, but your dog’s health is no laughing matter. Under no circumstances should you allow your pup to take part in the human (and adult) food and beverage choices of the day.

Step 5: Porta Potties for Pups? Think about where your dog is going to be able to relieve himself. Is there a park or grassy area near the event where you can walk him every few hours and allow himself to do his business? If so, remember to bring along plastic baggies so you can pick up his waste and dispose of it properly.

Step 6: After the tailgate: If you’re planning on leaving the parking lot and heading inside the stadium for the game, where does that leave your dog? Where will he go during the sporting event? Make arrangements beforehand to have someone pick him and never, ever, consider leaving him in the car during the event.

If you’re able to follow these steps, your dog can tailgate like one of the guys! Visit Another Perfect Gift for Valentines Day Gift Ideas.
