How to Survive as a Vampire (1)

Jailyn Schreiber is undead. A vampire. She has always gotten everything she's ever wanted. Except one thing: a chance to have a normal blood free life. With the help of Cherì, a helpful yet conflicted Elder. Finally she can have a halfway normal life with blood involved but that's a compromise. And then Jailyn finds out how hard it is to keep her true nature hidden. Especially when she's beginning to fall in... love.
Chapter One

I slip through the corridor like a person in a spy movie. I had watched enough of those to be a master. It helps that I am a vampire. That's right. The living undead.

In my case, I had been born dead. Yeah, that can be a downer but I am determined to be alive. It's one of the reasons that I now sneak around my kind to make my way to Cherì.

Cherì is an Elder. They are the old ones that have been alive since the London fire. Most humans don't realize but London used to be full of the undead. A pleasant thought.

My parents mustn't find out about what I am about to do. Cherì is not only an Elder but she is my gateway to freedom. The American dream. Fitting for where I am about to go to.

Cherì a petite blonde who looked to be twenty-three in human years was really much older and she refuses to reveal the number. You never ask a lady her age. She waited for me at the end of a winding tunnel.

She stared up with dead blue eyes. She has lived too long. I jogged up to her and she put her finger to her ruby colored lips.

"Calm down, Jailyn. I have to give you something special before I send you off to the United States. Now, follow me." She stalked away and we came up to a gigantic metal door.

She unlocked it with a key around her neck. With a flourish the door opened on its hinges. She entered without a look back at me. I followed and we both came up to a heavy-looking wooded box. The box had colorful designs and I was wrapped with one single red ribbon.

Careful not to touch it, Cherì, cut it with a fingertip. A plus for vampires. Razor-sharp claws to stop our prey. She looked back at me with a slightly wrinkled nose.

"Garlic." She said and I nodded. It was rare for us to come in contact with the deadly cloves but sometimes in order to keep something safe we infused it with garlic powder. Cherì lifted the lid and the most beautiful necklace appeared.

On instinct I hissed and jumped back. The necklace had a rosary. True to popular belief the cross or rosary can weaken a vampire. In fact, I can feel the power begin to sap away from me.

Cherì chided me, "You must wear this. If you don't you'll be persecuted as a vampire and our secret will be revealed. In short, you must guard this with your life." I opened my mouth to argue but she beat me to it, "Jailyn that is the deal. Rosary and you go or no Rosary and stay here for eternity. This is your only chance."

After a couple of seconds I made my decision. "Hand it over."
