How To Stop Heartburn Forever

There are many ways in which heartburn can be stopped. But are they effective at all? Find out here.
Heartburn that is caused by the Gastroesophageal Reflux disease or more colloquially ‘acid reflux’ is a common complaint that countless people face every day and cases are reported from all over the world. The name can however appear as a misnomer because the condition actually has nothing to do with the heart, nor does it actually cause any burning sensation. It is actually an enteric issue and is caused when the acidic contents of the stomach flow back into the esophagus (which they are not supposed to do) through a malfunctioning lower esophageal sphincter (LES).

This acidic reflux causes a burning sensation in the chest area, which is beneath the breastbone, and this can even extend to the throat. Heartburn may also occur if one has Hiatal Hernia which causes the upper part of the stomach to protrude upward into the chest cavity, thus deteriorating the strength of the sphincter to hold back the acidic stomach content. Often the feeling of heartburn gets so bad that the affected person may feel that he or she is suffering from heart attack. There is also the associated discomfort and this along with the pain occurs mostly in the night. As a result, most people cannot sleep – and there are those who cannot even lie down because this posture makes the reflux easier.

It is worth noting that not only the action of reflux, but some drugs may also induce heartburn in people who do not actually suffer from a LES-related problem. These include:

Sedatives used to treat anxiety or insomnia
Beta blockers used to treat high blood pressure or heart diseases
Calcium channel blockers prescribed for high blood pressure
Progestin for unusual menstrual bleeding or birth control
Dopamine used for treating Parkinson’s Disease
Some kinds of bronchodilators used for asthma patients
Tricyclic antidepressants

Rest assured, it is not a very easy task and can hardly be achieved with the help of over-the-counter medication or a handful of prescription drugs.
